MP raises questions over tragic fuel depot blast in Artsakh
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has raised questions regarding the deadly fuel depot explosion in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) in September 2023.
The September 25 blast occurred after Azerbaijan's military offensive and takeover of Artsakh, killing more than 200 people and injuring nearly 300 others. Over 20 people remain missing after the explosion.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Abrahamyan stated that around 30 blast victims were Artsakh army servicemen, while the total number of casualties from the security forces reached nearly 80.
“Many of those present at the scene of the explosion had gone to the depot from the frontlines, just after the fighting had ended. Having survived the war, they became victims of the devastating explosion,” the MP wrote, condemning the lack of transparency over the causes of the tragedy and accountability for those responsible.
He questioned why special forces, who had been tasked with securing the depot, were withdrawn just hours before the blast. He also pointed out the uncertainty surrounding whether the explosion was a tragic accident or an act of terrorism.
“Despite the loss of over 200 lives, there is still no concrete information about who is responsible for the blast, let alone any accountability,” the MP emphasized.
“How is it that the security of the depot was ensured by special forces before the explosion, yet they were withdrawn just hours before the explosion? Was the Armenian government unaware of this? I am certain it was. So, who gave the orders? What were their motives and how did the Defense Army command handle the depot’s security?” he added.
