Expert: Government undermines reputation of Armenian language
Political analyst Menua Soghomonyan, co-founder of the HayaKve initiative, accused Armenia’s current government of failing to prioritize the development and prestige of the Armenian language and undermining its reputation.
"Moreover, the ruling regime is dealing a heavy blow to the reputation of the Armenian language, in addition to the church, history and culture," he told a press conference on February 21 marked as International Mother Language Day.
Soghomonyan highlighted that researchers at the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences and university research departments are now required to undergo certification. In December 2023, the government introduced a new certification procedure mandating that scholars be evaluated solely based on articles published in scientific journals and publishing houses indexed in Web of Science and Scopus.
"This raises concerns because Armenian scientific journals are not included in these platforms. There are no Armenian-language journals indexed in Scopus or Web of Science that publish scientific papers in Armenian. As a result, scholars are effectively discouraged from writing research papers in Armenian and are compelled to publish exclusively in English or Russian," he explained.
Soghomonyan further noted that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s calls to amend the country’s constitution put the Declaration of Independence at risk, as it explicitly affirms Armenia’s right to an independent educational, scientific and cultural system.
