Ex-ombudsman slams charges against activist Edgar Ghazaryan
Former Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan has lambasted the prosecution of public and political activist Edgar Ghazaryan, calling it an attempt to silence his criticism of the Armenian government.
Ghazaryan faces up to five years in prison under Article 490 of Armenia’s Criminal Code for his critical remarks about judges. He has been banned from leaving the country and could be placed under administrative supervision.
“This is a blatant violation of freedom of speech under the guise of criminal prosecution. Even more concerning is the measure of restraint imposed on him,” Tatoyan said in a statement on Saturday.
“Public and political speech has broad limits – it can be shocking and unwelcome by the government. Political figures, in particular, are entitled to greater freedom in this regard and the state should not suppress it but rather ensure its protection. This is precisely what Edgar Ghazaryan’s statements represent.
“This case sets an extremely dangerous precedent, striking at the foundations of democracy and undermining the rule of law. It's also a clear example of selective enforcement. If such speech merits criminal charges, the prime minister and several MPs from the ruling Civil Contract party should also be prosecuted for their use of far harsher language against judges,” the statement reads.
