MEP: Nagorno Karabakh demonstrates progress in democracy, while policy of Azerbaijan is aggressive
Nagorno Karabakh demonstrates progress in state-building and strengthening of democratic values, MEP Frank Engel stated during his working visit to Stepanakert. As the "Caucasian Knot"reports, the MP believes that a more active disposition of the EU towards an unrecognized state can promote this process.
"I see that there are great achievements in the area of state-building and democratic values in Nagorno Karabakh. The EU should be more active for further development. We welcome the fact that the Nagorno Karabakh is positive about European values," said the MEP.
Frank Engel called Azerbaijan's policy towards Armenia "aggressive", adding that it could bring to the recognition of Nagorno Karabakh by the international community. "It is important that the process of international recognition began after the full settlement of the Karabakh conflict," Frank Engel said.
He noted that the European Union is currently considering the OSCE Minsk Group as the only format for Karabakh conflict settlement; however, there are other positive changes as well.
According to Engel, the relations between Armenia and the Customs Union will not affect the development of relations between Europe and Nagorno Karabakh. He believes that "every nation has to decide its own future by itself, and Armenia's decision to accept Russia’s offer of joining the CU obliges Europe and Armenia to preserve their relations at a high level."
In his turn, the director of "European Friends of Armenia" Eduardo Lorenzo Ochoa stated that he did not want to prematurely disclose the plans of his organization, but probably there would be new visits to the Nagorno Karabakh from Europe within ten days.
