Chairman of Press Council of Azerbaijan urges to block access to Facebook
Facebook administration must block the ‘anti-Azerbaijani’ pages. In case they fail to do that, access to Facebook should be blocked in Azerbaijan, the chairman of the Press Council of Azerbaijan, Aflatun Amashov, said during Azerbaijani media executives’ meeting with presidential adviser Ali Hasanov drawing the meeting participants’ attention to different ‘anti-Azerbaijani’ pages in Facebook, according to the report of Azerbaijani information portal Minval.az.
Minval.az writes that Amashov particularly mentioned a page named ‘Ümummilli paz.’ He said Azerbaijani officials’ caricatures with insulting comments are posted on that page.
The Azerbaijani news portal Haqqin.az adds that the adviser to the president of Azerbaijan on social and political issues, Ali Hasanov, commented on Amashov’s statement saying that ‘the Azerbaijani people are against that kind of democracy.’
After a deadly fire killed 15 people and injured dozens in Baku, a wave of the Azerbaijani users’ criticism rose in the social networks. Numerous caricatures appeared online, mocking the government's obsession with the European Games, which prioritizes image over safety. One depicts the mayor of Baku pointing at the building on fire with the caption: "I've lit the biggest Olympic torch."
