A 6.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Northern California rattled a wide swath of the state shortly after noon local time, according to data from the US Geological Survey. The quake occurred just off Cape Mendocino near Humboldt County and was felt as far away as San Francisco and Chico, California. Humboldt County emergency responders are assessing damage but have had no word of injuries or catastrophic damage.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said it has received a manslaughter lawsuit for failure to help in the tragic capsizing last month of a boat in the English Channel that cost the lives of at least 27 people trying to reach Britain. The manslaughter lawsuit, filed Friday by the French humanitarian organization Utopia 56, which “intends that investigations be carried out to determine the responsibilities of the French and British rescue services in this tragedy.”

Scientists say they have discovered the largest-ever fossil of a giant millipede on a beach in Northumberland, totally by chance. The millipede, known as Arthropleura, is thought to have been more than 2.5m long. It would have weighed about 50kg. The fossil segment was first spotted in 2018 when a large block of sandstone fell on to a beach at Howick Bay. It will be displayed in Cambridge's Sedgwick Museum next year.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa returned to Earth on Monday after a 12-day journey into space, ending a practice run for his planned trip around the moon with Elon Musk's SpaceX in 2023. Iraq has signed agreements with two Chinese companies to build 1,000 schools in the country in the space of two years, an Iraqi government official said on Sunday. British architect Richard Rogers, known for designing some of the world's most famous buildings including Paris' Pompidou Centre, has died aged 88, according to media reports. Rogers, who changed the London skyline with distinctive creations such as the Millennium Dome and the 'Cheesegrater', "passed away quietly" Saturday night, Freud communications agency's Matthew Freud told the Press Association.
