Haiti truck blast death toll rises to 75 as doctors scramble to treat wounded

The death toll from a fuel truck explosion in Haiti rose to 75 on Wednesday as doctors scrambled to treat the wounded from an incident that officials say was made more deadly by residents approaching the vehicle in a desperate search for fuel. Rescue workers recovered 61 bodies at the site of the accident, which took place late on Monday in Haiti's second-largest city of Cap-Haitie.

A four-year-old boy left his Sydney family gobsmacked after ordering more than $1,000 worth of gelato on a food delivery app, including a personalised birthday cake and tubs of his favourite flavours. Christian King used his father’s phone to order $1,139 worth of gelato and cakes from Gelato Messina on UberEats on Monday.

Archaeologists uncover oldest Buddha statues ever found in China

Two small figurines, made of copper, were created more than 2,200 years ago. One statue, known as Shakyamuni, shows Buddha standing on a platform and the other is for Five Tathāgatas, which highlights the five great Buddhas.

UNESCO honours Congolese rumba as cultural treasure

The heady beats of Congolese rumba were hailed by UNESCO on Tuesday as it added the central African music and dance to its list of global cultural treasures. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo Republic had submitted a joint bid for their rumba to receive heritage status for its unique sound that melds the drumming of enslaved Africans with the melodies of Spanish colonisers.

Hundreds trapped after fire in Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre

Wednesday’s blaze at the 38-story World Trade Centre in Causeway Bay triggered a large response, with firefighters trying to rescue several using emergency ladders. Dozens of people have already been evacuated. Local media say more than 300 people, including elderly, are trapped on a roof deck of skyscraper in Causeway Bay.

US surpasses 800,000 Covid-19 deaths as fifth wave takes hold

The United States, the country hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic, crossed 800,000 Covid-19 deaths on Tuesday, a tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University showed. Around 450,000 of the deaths occurred in 2021, despite highly effective vaccines that were first authorized in December 2020 and widely available by springtime.

'Bored Ape' NFT worth $284,495 accidentally sells for just $2,844

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is a collection of 10,000 pieces of digital NFT art living on the ethereum (eth) blockchain. On Saturday, the owner of such a piece of art accidentally sold his NFT for a fraction of what it was worth. Max, who goes by the username maxnaut, said the mistake happened after "a lapse of concentration" when he accidentally listed the NFT for 0.75 eth ($2,844) instead of 75 eth ($284,495).

Baboons can reproduce social conventions to problem solve

French researchers have observed non-human primates developing social conventions to work together to obtain a reward, in an experiment set up with a group of baboons. About twenty baboons raised at a primatology centre were given the task in pairs of making the same choice when each presented with a set of two images on touch screens.

Geologists uncover ‘treasure trove’ of dinosaur tracks in Poland

Several hundred dinosaur tracks, representing at least seven species, have been found and geologists say they are likely to find more. Described by the Polish Geological Institute-National Research Institute as a “treasure trove”, the fossilised tracks and bones were found in an opencast clay mine in Borkowice, 130km south of Warsaw.

Canada offers up to $40bn to compensate indigenous children

Canada has pledged up to C$40bn ($31bn) in compensation for indigenous children and families who suffered discrimination while in foster care. In September, a top court upheld a 2016 ruling that the government underfunded First Nations services compared with those for non-indigenous children. It ordered C$40,000 ($31,350) payouts to each child who was in the on-reserve welfare system after 2006. The government initially said it would appeal the verdict.
