Severe weather warning for UK as Storm Barra set to arrive on Tuesday

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for most of the UK ahead of the arrival of Storm Barra on Tuesday, as thousands of homes remain without power more than a week after Storm Arwen. Yellow wind weather warnings are in place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland for Tuesday, with yellow snow warnings in place in southern and western Scotland.

Tribal violence kills 24 in Sudan’s Darfur

Tribal clashes between Arabs and non-Arabs killed at least 24 people on Sunday in Sudan’s western Darfur region, an aid group said. The fighting grew out of a financial dispute late on Saturday between two individuals in the Krinding camp for displaced persons in West Darfur province, said Adam Regal, spokesman for the General Coordination for Refugees and Displaced in Darfur.

Russia beat Croatia to win third Davis Cup

Russia claimed a third Davis Cup title on Sunday after Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev both won their singles matches to defeat Croatia. Medvedev's 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 victory over Marin Cilic came after Rublev had earlier prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) over Borna Gojo, giving Russia an unassailable 2-0 lead in Madrid.

India Nagaland: Security forces kill 13 civilians amid ambush blunder

Indian security forces have killed at least 13 civilians in a botched ambush near the Myanmar border, officials say. An army patrol mistakenly opened fire on miners returning home after work, killing six. Seven more civilians and an Indian soldier died when angry locals confronted troops. Home Minister Amit Shah said he was "anguished" and vowed to investigate. The army has been battling separatist militants in the north-eastern state of Nagaland for years.

Indonesia Semeru volcanic eruption kills 14; dozens injured

The eruption of Semeru volcano has killed at least 14 people and injured dozens on Java island, Indonesia's disaster agency said on Sunday, as rescue teams searched for victims under layers of ash, sometimes digging with their bare hands. Semeru, the tallest mountain on Java, threw up towers of ash and hot clouds on Saturday that blanketed nearby villages in East Java province and sent people fleeing in panic.

Belgian police fired water cannon on Sunday to disperse protesters opposed to compulsory health measures against the coronavirus pandemic. Some 8,000 people marched through Brussels towards the headquarters of the European Union, chanting “Freedom!” and letting off fireworks.

Indonesia's Semeru volcano spews ash into sky

Indonesia's Semeru volcano on the east of Java island erupted on Saturday, spewing out clouds of smoke and ash and sending residents running in some nearby areas including the district of Lumajang. No damage to buildings or casualties were reported, the country's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said in a statement, adding that the local disaster agency was setting up evacuation tents.

Bolsonaro: Brazilian Supreme Court opens investigation into vaccine comments

Brazil's Supreme Court has opened an inquiry into comments made by President Jair Bolsonaro wrongly claiming that Covid-19 vaccines may increase the chance of contracting Aids. The comments, made during a social media livestream in October saw him temporarily banned from Facebook and YouTube under their fake news policies. Mr Bolsonaro has frequently cast doubt over the effectiveness of vaccines. He is already facing a separate inquiry into his handling of the pandemic.

South Korea sets daily records for new coronavirus cases, deaths

The 5,352 new cases reported by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on Saturday marked the third time this week the daily tally exceeded 5,000. The country’s death toll was at 3,809 after a record 70 virus patients died in the past 24 hours, while the 752 patients in serious or critical conditions were also an all-time high.

The Swedish pop supergroup ABBA on Friday filed a lawsuit to stop a British cover band known as Abba Mania from using that name. In a complaint filed with the U.S. District Court in Manhattan, lawyers for ABBA accused Abba Mania's managers of "parasitic and bad-faith conduct" by trading off ABBA's goodwill and cachet in promoting Abba Mania.

Mali: Dozens of civilians killed after militants attack bus

At least 31 people have been killed in central Mali after militants attacked a bus carrying civilians to a market, local officials have said. Unidentified gunmen opened fire and killed the driver, before setting the bus on fire, according to authorities. Most of the victims were women who were on their way to work at the market, local sources told EFE news agency.

50 Cent is sorry for poking fun at Madonna. The rapper and "Power" star recently mocked the icon for risque photos she posted of herself on Instagram showing her scantily-dressed on her bed. 50 Cent compared one of her photos to when a house falls on the Wicked Witch of the East from the "The Wizard of Oz." But Madonna took to her Instagram Stories on Thursday in response and said he went too far.

Kuttiyamma, a 104-year-old woman in the southern Indian state of Kerala, had always wanted to go to school. But an early marriage and a life centred on household chores put an end to that dream. But her dream became realistic when she finally got a chance to join a government-sponsored literacy programme. She made headlines by scoring 89 marks out of 100 in the official literacy test.

Cyprus police arrest man with knife, say unrelated to Pope visit

Police in Cyprus arrested a man carrying a knife during security screening to an outdoor stadium where Pope Francis was celebrating mass on Friday, but authorities said it appeared unrelated to the pontiff's presence on the island. Two security sources said the knife was found during security screening for thousands seeking access to the stadium on Friday morning. Authorities had taken strict security precautions and most attendees had to be at the venue hours earlier.
