Iran and Taliban forces clash in border area

Clashes erupted between Iranian soldiers and Taliban forces near the Afghanistan-Iran border, but appear to have led to no casualties and was later described as a “misunderstanding”. Iranian media say Taliban forces opened fire on Iranian farmers thinking they violated the border, leading Iranian soldiers to intervene.

Austria: Doctor fined for amputating wrong leg of patient

A surgeon in Austria has been fined after amputating the wrong leg of a patient earlier this year. The elderly patient's right leg was removed instead of his left, with the mistake only discovered two days later. On Wednesday, the court in Linz found the 43-year-old guilty of gross negligence and fined her €2,700. The widow of the patient, who died before the case came to court, was also awarded €5,000 in damages.

Ukraine’s Zelensky calls for direct talks with Russia ‘to end war’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday called for direct negotiations with Russia to end an eight-year war with pro-Russian separatists in his country’s east. “We must tell the truth that we will not be able to end the war without direct talks with Russia,” Zelensky said during an annual address to lawmakers.

Ethiopian gov’t says it retook string of towns from Tigray forces

The Ethiopian government says its forces recaptured Shewa Robit, a town some 220km from the capital Addis Ababa, which was claimed last week by fighters from the northern Tigray region. Government spokesman Legesse Tulu said on Wednesday Shewa Robit was among several small towns retaken by Ethiopia’s army and regional forces loyal to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who last week announced he would head to the battlefield to lead a counteroffensive after the Tigrayan fighters threatened to march on Addis Ababa.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken to meet with Russian foreign minister Thursday

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday in Stockholm, according to a State Department official. Blinken will also meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on the margins of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Ministerial Council meeting, the official said.

Sword carried by Napoleon in 1799 coup up for auction in US

The dress sword carried by Napoleon Bonaparte when he staged a coup in 1799 will go under the hammer at the weekend with five other weapons that belonged to the French emperor, US auctioneers announced. The lot, which will be put up for auction from December 3 to 5 by the Illinois-based Rock Island Auction Company, is valued at $1.5 million to $3.5 million.

Lesotho ex-PM Thomas Thabane charged with murdering wife

Lesotho's former Prime Minister Thomas Thabane has been charged with the 2017 murder of his estranged wife Lipolelo Thabane. His current wife, Maesaiah, was charged with the same crime last year. She was living with Mr Thabane at the time of the killing and they are accused of hiring hitmen. They have both denied any involvement.

COVID in Europe: Greece to fine over-60s €100 a month for refusing jab

Residents in Greece over the age of 60 will be fined €100 a month if they fail to get vaccinated against the coronavirus, under the first general COVID-19 mandate announced by the country’s government. The measure was announced in response to a surge in cases and the emergence of the Omicron variant. It will come into effect on January 16 with the fines to be added to their tax bills, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a televised announcement on Tuesday. Greece’s death toll exceeded 18,000 this week with confirmed infections at record levels.

Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean is at its highest point in two decades, UN says

Tens of millions are going hungry in Latin America and the Caribbean as the Covid-19 pandemic sharpens a regional malnutrition crisis to its worst levels in decades, according to the United Nations. In just one year -- from 2019 to 2020 -- the number of people living with hunger in the region rose by 30%, or 13.8 million people, a new United Nations Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition report said.

A U.S. judge sentenced the wife of imprisoned Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to three years in prison on Tuesday, after she pleaded guilty to helping the Sinaloa drug cartel. Before her sentencing in a federal court in Washington, Emma Coronel Aispuro, 32, pleaded with U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras to show her mercy.

La Palma: Authorities urge people to wear masks due to toxic gas

Lava stopped spewing from the main emission centre of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on Spain's La Palma island, as the secondary cone remained active, the National Geographic Institute said on Monday. Volcanic activity seemed to have shifted from the main cone to a secondary one seen from the east, as lava continued to flow from new emission points, according to the IGN.

Extreme winds in Turkey kill 6 and injure 52

At least six people were killed and 52 were injured after extreme wind storms swept through Turkey on Tuesday, according to state-run broadcaster Anadolu. Four of the fatalities were in Turkey's commercial hub of Istanbul, home to 16 million people, and three of the injured are in serious condition. Trees were uprooted, many rooftops were blown away, mosque minarets were toppled and an iconic clock tower was destroyed.

Yazidi genocide: IS member found guilty in German landmark trial

An Iraqi member of the Islamic State (IS) group has been found guilty of genocide against the Yazidi religious minority in a landmark German trial. A court in Frankfurt sentenced Taha al-Jumailly to life for crimes including the murder of a Yazidi girl in Iraq. The jihadist was accused of enslaving the five-year-old in 2015, chaining her up and leaving her to die of thirst.
