Rare original copy of US constitution auctioned for $43 mn

An extremely rare original copy of the US Constitution sold Thursday for $43 million -- a world record for a historical document at auction -- with a cryptocurrency consortium that coveted the text outbid by another investor. Sotheby's auction house, which staged the sale, said the item was one of only 13 known surviving copies of the US charter, signed on September 17, 1787 at Philadelphia's Independence Hall by America's founding fathers including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and James Madison.

Apple will let iPhone users repair their own devices

Apple plans to give customers the ability to repair their own devices amid growing pressure from regulators and consumers around the world for manufacturers to ease restrictions on fixing products. The company on Wednesday announced a new program that will make spare parts for Apple products available to purchase starting early next year. The program, known as Self Service Repair, will let users fix broken devices using repair manuals that Apple will post on its website.

Greece suspends espionage trial of 24 aid workers

The trial of more than 20 aid workers who helped migrants reach Greece between 2016 and 2018 has been adjourned shortly after opening. The defendants face a raft of charges, including espionage, forgery and the unlawful use of radio frequencies. Human rights groups have condemned the trial as "farcical" and politically motivated.

Israeli couple is home after weeklong detention in Turkey

An Israeli couple held by Turkey on suspicion of espionage returned home on Thursday after they were released from a weeklong detention. Mordi and Natalie Oknin arrived to their home in central Israel where they were greeted by family and a crowd of reporters. From her apartment’s balcony, Natalie thanked all those involved in securing their release.

Japan, South Korea territorial dispute derails US press event

A longstanding dispute over territorial claims to islets in the Sea of Japan has derailed a scheduled joint conference between US, South Korean and Japanese officials in Washington, DC. A trilateral meeting between the three countries in the US capital was meant to end on Wednesday with a joint news conference with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, South Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-kun, and their Japanese counterpart Takeo Mori.

German farm to cull 4,000 pigs after swine fever detected

A pig farm in northern Germany began culling all of its 4,000 animals on Wednesday after a case of African swine fever was confirmed there. The outbreak near Guestrow, about 185 kilometres northwest of Berlin, is the first at a large pig farm in Germany. African swine fever is usually deadly for pigs but doesn’t affect humans.

Philippines tells China to ‘back off’ after South China Sea clash

Three ships from the Chinese coastguard blocked and fired water cannons on two Philippines supply boats within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the disputed South China Sea, the Philippines has said. Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin said the incident took place near Ayungin Shoal (Second Thomas Shoal) on November 16 and the Philippine vessels, which were taking food supplies to military personnel stationed nearby, were forced to abandon the mission. No injuries were reported.

36-year-old rapper was shot and killed Wednesday inside a beloved local cookie shop in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, authorities said. Syrian star Souleyman detained in Turkey

Probe after British F-35 fighter crashes in Mediterranean

A British F-35 fighter jet has crashed into the sea during a routine operation in the Mediterranean, the Ministry of Defence has said. The pilot ejected and has safely returned to the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth and an investigation has begun, the MoD added. The incident occurred at 10:00 GMT over international waters and no other aircraft were involved.

Pike River: Bodies spotted 11 years after New Zealand mine disaster

At least two sets of human remains have been pictured deep inside a New Zealand coal mine, more than a decade after a series of explosions killed 29 men there. Cameras also picked up what may be a third body in a tunnel, police said. But they added that the hard-to-reach location meant there was no chance of recovering the remains.
