The new US special envoy for Afghanistan will visit Pakistan this week for a meeting with the Taliban foreign minister and senior diplomats from China and Russia, a Pakistani official and the US State Department said. It will be Thomas West's first trip to the region since taking over from Zalmay Khalilzad, the long-serving diplomat who spearheaded the talks that led to the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

China's foreign ministry said on Wednesday that a visit to Taiwan by a U.S. congressional delegation violates the One China policy, and that the United States must immediately stop all forms of official interaction with Taiwan. An original Apple computer built by firm co-founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs in 1976 has fetched $400,000 (£294,990) at auction in the US. The rare Hawaiian koa wood-cased Apple-1 - still functioning - is one of only 200 made and sold in kit form. The computer has only had two owners, a college professor and his student to whom he sold the machine for $650, said John Moran Auctioneers in California.

Excavated in the city of Yavne, the ancient jewel was uncovered from the site of the Byzantine era's largest known winery, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority. The ring was found just 150 meters away from the remains of a warehouse containing amphorae, a type of jar used to store wine. The excavation site has been dated to approximately the 7th century -- around the end of the Byzantine era and the start of the Early Islamic period -- though officials said the ring could be even older.

Several people have been rescued after a commercial building collapsed in the Turkish city of Malatya. Local officials reported that 13 people have been pulled from the rubble by Tuesday evening, but said more were still trapped. Malatya provincial governor Aydın Baruş told reporters that "around 20 people" were in the building when it collapsed.

Rapper and fashion mogul Ye’s high-end clothing company Yeezy agreed Monday to pay $950,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by four California district attorneys over slow shipping to customers. A family in Peru who thought they had bought a dog soon realised they had a fox on their hands after it attacked other animals in their neighbourhood. The Sotelos bought the puppy for $13 (£9.50) from a small shop in the capital, Lima, believing it was a purebred husky. But after a while, they received complaints from neighbours about their so-called dog named Run Run. The canine impostor has since been caught by wildlife officials.

Iran's military warned off two US drones which overflew waters where it was holding naval war games near the strategic Strait of Hormuz this week, state media reported Tuesday. The unmanned aircraft entered "two Iranian air defence identification zones... and changed course after air defence warned them it had decided to intercept them," the official IRNA news agency said.

Dean Stockwell, the former child star who became a key figure in the Hollywood counter-culture and enjoyed late success in popular TV shows, has died aged 85. According to Deadline, his family said he died at home “of natural causes”. A rescue team in Nepal has recovered the bodies of three French climbers who went missing in the Mount Everest region of the Himalayan country nearly two weeks ago, police said on Monday. The three were attempting to climb the 6,783-meter Kantega mountain, a smaller peak near Mount Everest in the remote Solukhumbu district. They had been out of contact with the expedition organizers since October 26, when an avalanche hit the area.

At least 25 children aged five to six have died after their straw-hut classrooms caught fire in southern Niger, officials say. Several others were injured during the blaze, which broke out on Monday morning as children took part in school lessons in the country's Maradi region. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

An injured man has been rescued from a cave in south Wales after being trapped for more than two days at least 300 metres from the surface. The man was brought out of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu in the Brecon Beacons at around 7.45pm on Monday following a 54-hour ordeal. His injuries are said to be non-life threatening, but were believed to include a broken jaw, leg, and spinal injuries.
