Nine firefighters have died near Brazil’s Altinopolis city after the roof collapsed in a cave while they were training inside, according to Brazilian authorities. The accident occurred on Sunday as 26 firefighters were on a training exercise in the Duas Bocas cave, the Sao Paulo fire department said on Twitter.

Japan’s ruling conservative party defied expectations in Sunday’s general election, with a comfortable victory that will boost the prime minister, Fumio Kishida, as he attempts to steer the economy out of the coronavirus pandemic. Three people have died and many others are feared trapped as rescue operations continue after a high-rise building under construction collapsed in Nigeria's commercial hub, Lagos. A digger is at the scene and rescue workers and some locals are searching through heaps of rubble and twisted metal for survivors. Earlier, pictures from the site showed crowds near a huge mound of debris.

Three luxury apartments nestled beneath the Grade II listed nuclear bunker in Mistley, Essex, are going up for auction later this month - with a guide price of £1.4million. The bunker was built in 1951 - during the Cold War - to be used as a communications hub in the event of an attack. It was kitted out with military grade tank steel and 600mm thick reinforced concrete walls to protect government officials - but it was never used.

France has 48 hours to back down in a bitter dispute over fishing rights, or face legal action from London under the Brexit trade deal, the United Kingdom has warned. On Monday, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said Paris had “behaved unfairly” and made “completely unreasonable threats”, with the two sides at loggerheads over the number of licences the UK has handed French vessels keen to fish in its territorial waters.

A wooden canoe used by the ancient Maya and believed to be over 1,000 years old has turned up in southern Mexico, officials said on Friday, part of archeological work accompanying the construction of a major new tourist train. Measuring a little over 5 feet (1.6 meters) in length and 2-1/2 feet (80 cm) wide, the canoe was possibly used to transport water from the cenote or deposit ritual offerings, according to a statement from Mexican antiquities institute INAH. The canoe is tentatively dated to between 830-950 AD.

The collision happened near London Road and involved a South Western Railway and a Great Western service. A train driver, who was trapped, was treated by paramedics. In total, 17 people were taken to hospital. The crash happened at 18:46 GMT when one train hit an object in a tunnel, and the second train then collided with it due to signalling problems.

A 55-year-old man has died after being gored at a bull-running event in the eastern Spanish town of Onda. The man was repeatedly attacked by the bull at the Fira de Onda festival, suffering a head wound and having an artery punctured in his left thigh. He died at a hospital in the nearby town of Villareal. Onda council said it had cancelled all bull-running events in the town's festival, but other activities would go ahead.

Restaurateur Ado Campeol, dubbed "the father of Tiramisu" by Italian media, has died aged 93. Campeol was the owner of Le Beccherie, a restaurant in Treviso in northern Italy where the famous dessert was invented by his wife and a chef. The dish, featuring coffee-soaked biscuits and mascarpone, was added to their menu in 1972 but never patented by the family.

A 24-year-old man dressed in Batman's Joker costume attacked passengers on a Tokyo train line on Sunday evening, injuring 17 people as many party-goers headed into the city centre for Halloween gatherings, media reported. Police arrested the suspected attacker on the spot, media reported. A man believed to be in his 60s was unconscious and in critical condition after being stabbed, while witnesses also said the attacker had spread fluid around the train and started a fire, according to media.

Alerted to a gas leak, the Puebla state government said it had averted a higher death toll by evacuating residents from the site in the San Pablo Xochimehuacan municipality before three explosions occurred, wrecking between 30 and 50 homes. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Twitter one person had so far died and 15 more were injured in the overnight blast, and that some 1,400 rescue workers had been mobilized.
