An Israeli airstrike in central Syria has killed one Syrian soldier and three pro-Iranian fighters, according to a UK-based war monitor. Kenyan distance runner Agnes Tirop, a two-times World Championship bronze medallist, was found stabbed to death at her home, Athletics Kenya said on Wednesday. An Indian man, who was convicted for killing his wife by making a cobra bite her, has been punished with a rare double life sentence. Sooraj Kumar was arrested last year after his wife, Uthra, died from a snakebite. Police began investigating after her family alleged murder, saying Sooraj had been harassing them for dowry. On Monday, a court found him guilty of releasing a cobra onto the bed while Uthra slept. The 25-year-old homemaker was found dead in her home in May last year.

The EU envoy charged with coordinating talks on reviving a troubled nuclear deal between Iran and major powers is to visit Tehran on Thursday, the Iranian foreign ministry said. Australia has agreed to build a 20-kilogram (44-pound) semi-autonomous lunar rover for NASA to take to the moon as early as 2026 in search of oxygen. The rover would collect soil that contains oxides and NASA would use separate equipment to extract oxygen from that soil, a government statement said. Oxygen extracted from the lunar surface would ultimately be used to sustain a human presence on the moon and support future missions to Mars.

A pair of carved stone statues used as garden ornaments have sold for more than £195,000 ($265,510) after it was revealed that they were ancient Egyptian relics dating back thousands of years, an auction house has said. The artifacts were acquired from a garden in Sudbury, Suffolk, in eastern England. Mander Auctioneers, which handled the sale, said they were contacted by a family looking to get rid of items from their old house before moving home.

Toby, the world's oldest white rhino, has died at the age of 54 in a zoo in northern Italy, a spokeswoman for the establishment said Tuesday. "Nonno Toby" (Grandpa Toby) passed away on October 6, Elisa Livia Pennacchioni of the Parco Natura Viva, a zoo near the northern city of Verona, told AFP. White rhinos normally live up to 40 years when held in captivity, and up to 30 years in the wild, she said.

A sale of items belonging to the notorious US gangster Al Capone has raked in $3m (£2.2m) at an auction held over the weekend in California. Some 174 items - including firearms and personal photographs as well as jewellery and furniture - featured. The event, called A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone, was held at a private club and attracted nearly 1,000 bidders. The most popular item was Capone's favourite gun, which sold for $860,000.

At least 28 people have been killed and many others injured in a bus crash in north-west Nepal, police say. The vehicle was travelling through Mugu district when it left the road and plunged down a hillside shortly after midday on Tuesday, local media report. The cause of the crash is unclear, but some reports suggest the bus may have had an issue with its brakes failing.
