EU rights court rejects sex abuse case against Vatican, cites immunity of ‘sovereign’ states

The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday rejected a case by alleged victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests who sought to hold the Vatican responsible, saying the Holy See benefited from legal immunity granted to sovereign states.

England vs Hungary: Crowd trouble early on in Wembley qualifier

Hungary fans fought with police in the opening minutes of Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley. Some of their almost 1,000 fans - many in the black T-shirts of Hungary's ultras - booed once again as England players took the knee before kick-off. They clashed with stewards soon after the game started and police arrived, hitting supporters with batons. Many Hungary fans climbed over a barrier and hit security personnel - with police driven into the concourse.

Kuwait allows women to join military in combat roles

Kuwaiti women will be allowed to enlist in the military in combat roles for the first time after years of having been restricted to civilian roles, the army said Tuesday. Defence Minister Hamad Jaber al-Ali al-Sabah said the door had been opened for women to join various combat ranks, including as officers, the Kuwait Armed Forces tweeted.

BTS suits, Katy Perry dress to be sold at charity auction

The custom Louis Vuitton suits BTS wore for their Grammy Awards performance earlier this year are among the items that will be sold at a charity auction. A white and gold long sleeve dress worn by Dolly Parton and a silver dress Katy Perry performed in are among the other items that will be sold to benefit the Recording Academy’s MusiCares, which helps provide health and other safety net assistance for those who need it in the music industry.

Thief inspired by French Netflix show Lupin robs oratory near Milan

A man told police he was mimicking the style of the suave master thief in the French TV series Lupin when he attempted to rob the bar of a church oratory in northern Italy. Donning a leather jacket, similar to the one worn by the protagonist of the Netflix show, the 21-year-old, who has not been named, said he waited for the church bells to ring so as to muffle the sound of him smashing through the glass door of the oratory’s bar on Saturday night.

Korea short track champion Shim barred from training with team mates

South Korea's double Olympic short track gold medallist Shim Suk-hee has been excluded from training with the national team amid a probe into text messages she sent during the 2018 Games that suggested she may have intended to take down a team mate. An online newspaper last week revealed messages exchanged between Shim and a coach during the Games in which she ridiculed her team mate Choi Min-jeong and said she might try to create a "female Steven Bradbury" if things were not going her way.

Researchers say fossil shows humans, dogs lived in C. America in 10,000 BC

The fossil of a jaw bone could prove that domesticated dogs lived in Central America as far back as 12,000 years ago, according to a study by Latin American scientists. The dogs, and their masters, potentially lived alongside giant animals, researchers say.

Netflix hit show 'Squid Game' spurs interest in learning Korean

Interest in learning Korean has spiked since the launch of hit Netflix show "Squid Game", tutoring services reported, underscoring a growing global obsession with South Korean culture from entertainment to beauty products. Language learning app Duolingo Inc said the nine-part thriller, in which cash-strapped contestants play deadly childhood games in a bid to win 45.6 billion won ($38.19 million), had spurred both beginners and existing students hoping to improve their skills.

Elk with car tyre stuck around its neck for two years is free at last

Wildlife officials in Colorado say an elusive elk that wandered the hills with a car tyre around its neck for at least two years has at last been freed. The four-and-a-half-year-old, 270kg (600lb) bull elk was spotted near Pine Junction, south-west of Denver, on Saturday evening and tranquillised, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. It was the fourth attempt wildlife officers had made in the past week to try to capture and help it.

Amy Winehouse belongings expected to reach $2 mn at auction

Hundreds of items that belonged to late Grammy-winning artist Amy Winehouse, including the dress she wore during her final concert, are going up for auction in the United States. Auction house Julien's will put the more than 800 personal effects -- which include shoes, shorts, bras, books and records -- under the hammer in Beverly Hills, California on November 6 and 7. They went on display in New York on Monday and are expected to fetch up to $2 million total.

Israel winery: 1,500-year-old Byzantine wine complex found

A 1,500-year-old wine-making complex, said to have been the world's largest at the time, has been discovered in Israel, archaeologists say. Five presses were unearthed at the huge Byzantine-era winery at Yavne, south of Tel Aviv, which is estimated to have produced two million litres a year. After a sophisticated production process it was exported around the Mediterranean.

China has won AI battle with U.S., Pentagon's ex-software chief says

China has won the artificial intelligence battle with the United States and is heading towards global dominance because of its technological advances, the Pentagon's former software chief told the Financial Times. China, the world’s second largest economy, is likely to dominate many of the key emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and genetics within a decade or so, according to Western intelligence assessments.

Lava blocks the size of buildings falling from La Palma volcano

Blocks of molten lava as large as three-storey buildings rolled down a hillside on the Spanish island of La Palma on Sunday while a series of tremors shook the ground three weeks after the volcano erupted. There were 21 seismic movements on Sunday, with the largest measuring 3.8, the Spanish National Geological Institute (ING) said, shaking the ground in the villages of Mazo, Fuencaliente and El Paso.

Paul McCartney says John Lennon 'instigated' the Beatles' break-up

For almost 50 years, Sir Paul McCartney has shouldered the blame for breaking up the Beatles. But in a new BBC interview, he has said the split was prompted by John Lennon. "I didn't instigate the split. That was our Johnny," he told interviewer John Wilson. "I am not the person who instigated the split. "Oh no, no, no. John walked into a room one day and said I am leaving the Beatles. And he said, 'It's quite thrilling, it's rather like a divorce.' And then we were left to pick up the pieces."
