Russia's former Imperial capital is set to play host to the wedding of a descendant of the Russian royal family in the first such event in more than a century. A 96-year-old woman who worked as a secretary for a Nazi concentration camp commandant has been caught several hours after she absconded from her care home and missed the start of her trial in northern Germany. Irmgard Furchner was 18 when she started work at Stutthof camp on the Baltic coast in the Nazi-occupied area of the Free City of Danzig. She was due to stand trial on Thursday on charges of aiding and abetting the murder of thousands of prisoners.

A prison massacre that erupted Tuesday in Ecuador has killed 116 people and wounded about 80, Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso said Wednesday. The death toll represents a significant uptick from earlier estimates after Tuesday's bloody clashes at the Litoral Penitentiary, located on the outskirts of the coastal city of Guayaquil. In a speech televised Wednesday, Lasso indicated the prison was not yet entirely secured, and urged inmates' relatives and families to stay away from the area.

The UN has expressed its shock at the expulsion of seven of its senior officials by the Ethiopian government. Secretary-General António Guterres said it was engaging with the government "in the expectation" the affected staff could "continue their important work". Ethiopia earlier declared the seven "persona non grata" and said they had 72 hours to leave the country.

Brazilian soccer legend Pele has been cleared to leave a Sao Paulo hospital on Thursday after recovering from an operation to remove a tumor from his colon, according to a hospital bulletin. The bulletin from the Albert Einstein Hospital said Pele will receive chemotherapy following the Sept. 4 operation, which kept him hospitalized for weeks.

Hawaii's Kīlauea volcano, in its first eruption in nearly a year, was filling the crater at its summit with hot red lavaand clouding the skies with volcanic smog on Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The latest eruption of Hawaii's youngest and most active volcano began on Wednesday afternoon.

A bright red river of lava from the volcano on Spain’s La Palma island finally tumbled over a cliff and into the Atlantic Ocean, setting off huge plumes of steam and possibly toxic gases on Wednesday. The immediate area had been evacuated for several days as authorities waited for the lava that began erupting Sept. 19 to traverse the 6½ kilometers to the island’s edge. On the way down from the Cumbre Vieja volcanic ridge, the lava flows have engulfed at least 656 buildings, mostly homes and farm buildings, in its unstoppable march to the sea.

French experts on Wednesday said they had measured Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in western Europe, at almost a metre lower than its previous official height. Geographical experts said that after an expedition in mid-September the mighty mountain in the heart of the French Alps was 4,807.81 metres high, lower than their last published estimate of 4,808.72 metres in 2017.

Three California parents are suing to prevent the state's public school system from reciting prayers to Aztec deities that have been worshipped with human sacrifice – arguing that doing so violates the U.S. and state constitutions. The issue emerged earlier this year when researcher Chris Rufo reported on that particular aspect of the state's ethnic studies curriculum. As countries around the world reopen borders and loosen coronavirus restrictions, Beijing is doubling down on its zero-Covid strategy. The latest example: a $260 million, 5,000-room quarantine facility for incoming travelers set to open in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou in the coming days. YouTube will block all anti-vaccine content, moving beyond its ban on false information about the COVID vaccines to include content that contains misinformation about other approved vaccines, it said in a blog post on Wednesday. Examples of content that won't be allowed on YouTube include claims that the flu vaccine causes infertility and that the MMR shot, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, can cause autism, according to YouTube's policies.
