Ethnic Serbs dig in for long protest over Kosovo ban

Ethnic Serbs dug in Wednesday for a long protest over the Kosovo government's decision to ban vehicles with Serbian plates as they formed a tent camp on the border with Serbia. They started blocking border traffic after the ethnic Albanian-led government decided on Monday to oblige drivers with Serbian registration plates to put on temporary ones when entering Kosovo. A few hundred ethnic Serbs were camping in tents by trucks parked in the middle of the roads leading to the border.

Over 30 dead during Guinea-Bissau health worker strike, union says

More than 30 people have died because a health workers' strike in Guinea-Bissau has paralysed the healthcare system, a spokesperson for the nurses' union said on Wednesday. The boycott over working conditions, pay and other issues was launched on Monday in the small West African nation where chronically under-equipped hospitals and clinics have long angered workers and endangered patients.

German auto giants place their bets on hydrogen cars

Battery power may be the frontrunner to become the car technology of the future, but don't rule out the underdog hydrogen. That's the view of some major automakers, including BMW and Audi, which are developing hydrogen fuel-cell passenger vehicle prototypes alongside their fleets of battery cars as part of preparations to abandon fossil fuels.

Trump sues niece and New York Times over tax story

Former US President Donald Trump is suing his niece and the New York Times over a 2018 article that alleged he was involved in "dubious tax schemes". The lawsuit, filed in New York, accuses Mary Trump and newspaper reporters of being "engaged in an insidious plot" to obtain confidential documents. It alleges that Ms Trump, 56, breached a settlement agreement barring her from disclosing the documents. In response, Ms Trump said the lawsuit was a sign of "desperation".

Rare rhino horns go up in flames in India anti-poaching campaign

Nearly 2,500 rare rhino horns were destroyed Wednesday in the first ceremony of its kind in northeastern India as part of an anti-poaching drive to mark World Rhino Day. The endangered one-horned rhinoceros used to be widespread in the region but hunting and habitat loss have slashed its numbers to just a few thousand, with most now found in India's Assam state. Trade in rhino horn has been banned since 1977 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Most infants in 91 countries are malnourished, warns Unicef

Only a third of children under two in many developing countries are fed what they need for healthy growth and no progress has been made on improving their nutrition over the past decade. Unicef, the UN’s children’s agency, said in a report published on Wednesday that a combination of crises from Covid-19 to conflict and the climate breakdown had stunted progress on children’s nutrition in 91 countries.

Global sea levels are rising at an 'alarming rate' of 0.12 inches a year thanks to melting ice

Global average sea levels are rising by about 0.12 inches (3.1mm) every year. This is according to the fifth annual report by the Copernicus Marine Service. The report used ocean measurements and satellite observations over a year. The annual report includes contributions from 150 scientists from more than 30 renowned European institutions and is backed by the European Comission.

Will Smith mansion: Fire trucks rush to actor’s Malibu home amid reports of blaze

Fire trucks and an ambulance were seen going to the $42 million dream home Will Smith built in Calabasas, Calif., after a blaze there caused smoke damage, officials confirmed Tuesday. Video footage from the sprawling estate on Cold Canyon Road showed an ambulance with flashing lights entering just after 3:30 p.m. Monday, followed by an ambulance, several other cars and a utility vehicle. Despite the presence of an ambulance, there were no injuries, the fire official said.

Rolling Stones resume live shows with emotional Charlie Watts tribute

The Rolling Stones have played their first concert since the death of their drummer Charlie Watts last month. The small warm-up show took place in Massachusetts Gillette Stadium, to an audience of about 300 people. Singer Sir Mick Jagger dedicated the show to Watts, who died of an unspecified illness at the age of 80.

Eruption on Spanish island could last 3 months, experts say

The volcanic eruption on a Spanish island and its aftermath could last for up to 84 days, experts said Wednesday. The Canary Island Volcanology Institute said it based its calculation on the length of previous eruptions on the archipelago, which like the latest eruption were followed by heavy lava flows and lasting seismic activity.

Rare Australia earthquake triggers panic in Melbourne

A rare quake rattled southeastern Australia early Wednesday, shaking buildings, knocking down walls and sending panicked residents running into the streets of Melbourne. The shallow quake hit east of the country's second-largest city just after 9:00am local time and was felt hundreds of kilometres away. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 5.8, later revised up to 5.9, and said it struck at a depth of 10 kilometres.

It devastated the local area, covering it in volcanic deposits some 1.6 feet thick. It was thought that the disaster caused the area to be abandoned for some time. Yet a University of Colorado Boulder expert found evidence to dispute this. The Campana pyramid at San Andrés was built from volcanic rock shortly after.

Macron and Modi vow to ‘act jointly’ after submarine dispute

President Emmanuel Macron has discussed cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as France deals with the fallout from Australia’s cancellation of a $40bn French submarine order.
