Jarred Gillett will become the first overseas official to referee a Premier League game when he takes charge of Watford v Newcastle on Saturday. The 34-year-old Australian was promoted to Select Group 1 by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) before the start of the season. Gillett has been on Premier League VAR duty this season and has refereed two Championship games this term. He began officiating in England in 2019 after leaving Australia's A-League.

President Joe Biden’s administration wants to nearly double the number of refugees admitted to the United States to 125,000 in the upcoming fiscal year starting on Oct. 1 in keeping with a campaign promise, according to a statement from the State Department. The State Department will consult with the Department of Homeland Security and Congress to lift the cap, which was set at 62,500 for the 2020 fiscal year ending this month, the statement said.

Lava pouring from the Canary Islands' first volcanic eruption in 50 years has forced authorities to evacuate another part of El Paso on the island of La Palma, the town's mayor said on Tuesday. Two Japanese sisters have been certified by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living identical twins at over 107 years and 300 days. Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama have broken the record set by late Japanese twin sisters Kin Narita and Gin Kanie. Umeno and Koume, both described as sociable people, were born on 5 November 1913 on Shodoshima island. The announcement was made on Monday to coincide with Respect for the Aged Day - a national holiday in Japan.

A French highline walker has crossed the River Seine in Paris at a height of 70 metres, in a breathtaking feat watched by cheering crowds on the Eiffel Tower and along the banks. Attached by a strap to a safety lanyard, 27-year-old Nathan Paulin slowly progressed barefoot on a line stretched across the river between the Eiffel Tower and the Chaillot theatre. He stopped for a few breaks, sitting or lying on the rope.

Jersey City Police responded to a call of a child in danger and found a man threatening to throw the baby from the second story of the building, Mayor Steven Fulop said in an Instagram post. Officers set up a perimeter to negotiate, but "eventually the man did throw the one-month-old baby from the second story of the building," the mayor said. Officer Eduardo Matute caught the baby, who was not physically harmed, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

A swarm of bees has killed 63 endangered African penguins on a beach outside Cape Town, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds said on Sunday. "After tests, we found bee stings around the penguins' eyes," said the foundation's David Roberts, a clinical veterinarian.

A military training jet crashed Sunday in a neighborhood near Fort Worth, Texas, injuring the two pilots and damaging three homes but not seriously hurting anyone on the ground, authorities said. Both pilots managed to eject from the plane before it crashed in Lake Worth, which is just west of Fort Worth, authorities said at a news conference.
