A solicitor accused of using syringes to inject blood into food at three west London supermarkets has appeared in court. Leoaai Elghareeb is charged with contaminating or interfering with goods with intent at three stores – a Tesco Express, Little Waitrose and Sainsbury’s Local – on Fulham Palace Road. The 37-year-old, from Fulham, did not indicate a plea at Westminster magistrates court on Friday afternoon.

The government has announced plans to ban single-use plastic cutlery, plates and polystyrene cups in England as part of what it calls a "war on plastic". Ministers said the move would help to reduce litter and cut the amount of plastic waste in oceans. Hollywood actor Tom Cruise's BMW was stolen while he was filming in Birmingham. The actor has been in the city filming the seventh instalment in the Mission: Impossible film series. A BMW X7 was stolen from Church Street on Tuesday and recovered a short time later, West Midlands Police said. The vehicle was found in nearby Smethwick. CCTV is being examined and inquiries continue.

U.S. forces helping to evacuate Afghans desperate to flee Taliban rule were on alert for more attacks on Friday after at least one Islamic State suicide bomber killed 85 people including 13 U.S. soldiers outside the gates of Kabul airport. A health official and a Taliban official said the toll of Afghans killed had risen to 72, including 28 Taliban members, although a Taliban spokesman later denied that any of their fighters guarding the airport perimeter had been killed. The U.S. military said 13 of its service members were killed in what it described as a complex attack.

Scientists in Egypt have identified a new species of four-legged whale that lived around 43 million years ago. The fossil of the amphibious Phiomicetus anubis was originally discovered in Egypt's Western Desert. Its skull resembles that of Anubis, the ancient Egyptian jackal-headed god of the dead after which it was named. The ancestors of modern whales developed from deer-like mammals that lived on land over the course of 10 million years.

Pop group Abba have teased a major announcement for next week, as fans await their first new music in 39 years. The Swedish band launched a new website on Thursday morning titled "Abba Voyage", asking fans to register interest in a new project. It is expected to be a long-gestating "hologram tour" that Abba initially announced in 2016. The band are also expected to release five new songs to accompany the show.
