Gunman kills four in attack near French embassy in Tanzania

A gunman killed three police officers and a private security guard on a rampage through a diplomatic quarter of Tanzania's main city Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, before being shot dead while holed up in a guardhouse at the French embassy's gate.

Leopard attacks model in German photoshoot

A 36-year-old model has been mauled by a leopard during a photoshoot that went wrong at a retirement home for show animals in eastern Germany. The woman, described as an animal lover as well as a photo model, suffered serious head injuries inside an enclosure that is home to two leopards, Troy and Paris. Police said she was taken to hospital on Tuesday with serious injuries.

Military aircraft with Afghan evacuees arrives in South Korea

Nearly 400 evacuated Afghans arrived on Thursday in Seoul, where the government said it was amending the law to allow long-term stays for those who worked on South Korean projects in Afghanistan before the Taliban seized power this month. At least two flights were to bring in 391 people, including the families of workers at the Korean embassy, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), a hospital and Korean government-run vocational training institute and military bases.

‘Mini-Neptunes’ beyond solar system may soon yield signs of life

Signs of life beyond our solar system may be detectable within two to three years, experts have said after rethinking the kinds of planets that may be habitable. Researchers have mostly looked for planets of a similar size, mass, temperature and atmospheric composition to Earth. But University of Cambridge astronomers believe there may be more promising possibilities after recent work suggested that a “mini-Neptune” more than twice the radius of Earth and more than eight times as massive may also be habitable.

Guardiola plans to quit Man City in 2023, eyes national team job

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said on Wednesday he plans to leave the English champions when his current contract ends in 2023 and hopes to eventually take charge of a national team. "After seven years in this team, I think I'll take a break," said 50-year-old Guardiola.

Japan suspends 1.6 mln doses of Moderna shot days after contamination reports

Japan suspended the use of 1.63 million doses of Moderna Inc's (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday, more than a week after the domestic distributor received reports of contaminants in some vials. Both Japan and Moderna said that no safety or efficacy issues had been identified and that the suspension was just a precaution. But the move prompted several Japanese companies to cancel worker vaccinations planned for Thursday.

Death toll rises to at least 20 in western Venezuela floods

At least 20 people have died in the western Venezuelan state of Merida following intense rains that caused mudslides and rivers to overflow. On state TV on Wednesday a ruling Socialist Party official in Merida announced the death toll had risen and said authorities were working to restore telephone service in some areas.

Premier League clubs will not release players for international games in UK's red-list countries

The Premier League says its clubs have "reluctantly but unanimously" decided not to release players for matches in countries on the UK's red-list for the upcoming international break next month. According to UK government guidelines, anyone returning from a red-list country must quarantine for 10 full days, meaning players could miss multiple club games.

Nirvana sued by the baby from Nevermind's album cover

Spencer Elden, the man who was photographed as a baby on the album cover for Nirvana's Nevermind, is suing the band alleging sexual exploitation. The cover depicts Elden as a four-month-old in a swimming pool, grasping for a dollar bill that's being dangled in front of him on a fishing line. Elden is asking for damages of at least $150,000 (£109,000) from each of the 15 defendants, who include surviving band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic; the manager's of Kurt Cobain's estate; Cobain's former wife Courtney Love; and photographer Kirk Weddle.

Paris Saint-Germain are considering a €160m bid from Real Madrid for Kylian Mbappé, with the France forward hoping to seal a move to the Spanish giants. France forward has told PSG he wants to move to Spain. Mbappé has only one year of his contract remaining.

Iraq seeks to ease Saudi-Iran hostility at Baghdad summit

Iraq has invited Iran and Tehran's Gulf Arab foes to a summit in Baghdad with the aim of calming tensions which have brought them close to open conflict in recent years. Officials say the meeting, which will also discuss the war in Yemen, Lebanon's collapse and a regional water crisis, could take a step towards Saudi-Iranian rapprochement even though they have yet to say what representation they will send.

Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with 'hostile' Morocco

Algeria's Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said Tuesday that his country has severed diplomatic relations with Morocco due to "hostile actions", following months of resurgent tensions between the North African rivals. The countries have long accused one another of backing opposition movements as proxies, with Algeria's support for separatists in the disputed region of Western Sahara a particular bone of contention for Morocco.

U.S. President Joe Biden declared Tuesday he is sticking to his Aug. 31 deadline for completing a risky airlift of Americans, endangered Afghans and others seeking to escape Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. The decision defies allied leaders who want to give the evacuation more time and opens Biden to criticism that he caved to Taliban deadline demands.

South Korea parliament set to pass law to curb 'fake news'

South Korea's ruling party is set to revise a media law to rein in "fake news" by giving courts the power to award much bigger damages but opponents said it would discourage reporters from delving into the shady dealings of the powerful. South Korea is home to a thriving news industry, ranking relatively high on world media freedom tables but it has struggled with the spread of misinformation and cyber bullying in recent years.

Charlie Watts, legendary Rolling Stones drummer, dies at 80

Charlie Watts, the self-effacing and unshakeable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest bands and used his “day job” to support his enduring love of jazz, has died at the age of 80, according to his publicist. Watts had announced he would not tour with the Stones in 2021 because of an undefined health issue.

Ancient Chinese woman 'sacrificed herself' 1,500 years ago so her dead body could be buried in an 'eternal love lock'

Archaeologists uncovered the 1,500 year-old skeletal remains of a man and woman positioned in an 'eternal love lock'  in northern China. They were found in June 2020 while workers excavated the Shanxi province. The man was believed to be between 29-35 and had signs of trauma. The woman was between 35-40 and likely sacrificed herself to be buried. The burial is the first of its kind in China and a sign that changes towards love happened during the North Wei Dynasty.

Kamala Harris Vietnam trip delayed after two US officials report Havana syndrome

US vice-president Kamala Harris’ trip from Singapore to Vietnam was delayed by several hours on Tuesday by an investigation into two possible cases of the so-called Havana syndrome in Hanoi, administration officials said. The investigation was in its early stages and officials deemed it safe for Harris to make her scheduled stop in Vietnam, which is part of her trip across Asia meant to reassure allies about American foreign policy amid the tumultuous evacuation of US forces from Afghanistan.
