Chuck Close, photorealism pioneer, dies at 81

Painter and photographer Chuck Close, who rose to acclaim with his photorealistic painting, died Thursday at the age of 81, US media reported. Born in 1940 in the US state of Washington, Close was known for his gigantic portraits or self-portraits -- some of which were mosaics and others so detailed that they looked like photographs to the naked eye.

Canadian soldier faces jail over feeding cannabis cupcakes to troops

A Canadian soldier who fed cannabis cupcakes to her fellow troops during a live firearms exercise could now be sentenced to five years in prison. Bombardier Chelsea Cogswell was found guilty of administering "a noxious thing" to eight soldiers, as well as behaving in a disgraceful manner. Soldiers had described feeling drunk and confused while handling weapons after eating the cakes in 2018. The crime occurred three months before cannabis was legalised across Canada.

Chiba, a ferociously talented martial artist whose international renown grew with films like "The Street Fighter" and "Kill Bill" series, died this week from Covid-19 complications, his representative Timothy Beal confirmed to CNN. Chiba was 82.

Denis Law: Man Utd and Scotland legend diagnosed with dementia

Law, 81, who says he has Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, is the latest former player to reveal he is suffering from the degenerative brain disease. His former United team-mate Sir Bobby Charlton was diagnosed with the condition last year. "This will not be an easy journey especially for the people who love you the most," Law said.

Bombing hits Pakistan Shiite procession, killing at least 3

A powerful roadside bomb exploded among a procession of Shiite Muslims in central Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least three and wounding over 50 people, local police said. The attack took place in the deeply conservative city of Bahawalnagar in the eastern Punjab province.

Flying solo, 19-year-old woman takes off on round-the-world record bid

Pilot Zara Rutherford, 19, took off on Wednesday at the start of a three-month bid to become the youngest woman to fly solo round the world. Rutherford departed from Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport in western Belgium in her Shark ultralight, the world's fastest microlight aircraft.

Israel extends Covid restrictions to three-year-olds as cases surge

Israel is now requiring anyone over the age of three to show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test before entering many indoor spaces, as it tackles a sharp rise in infections. Restaurants, cafes, museums, libraries, gyms and pools are among the venues covered by the "Green Pass" system. However, proof of immunity is not needed to go into shops or malls.

Haiti earthquake: Death toll reaches nearly 2,000

At least 1,941 people are known to have died in Haiti in Saturday's powerful earthquake - a rise of more than 500 on the previous figure, officials say. Rescue workers have managed to pull 34 people alive from the rubble but many are still missing after the 7.2-magnitude quake. Nearly 10,000 people have been injured and hospitals were left overwhelmed. The UN says about 500,000 children now have limited or no access to shelter, safe water and food.

Extreme winds escalate California wildfire, prompting power shutoffs

California's wildfire crisis escalated on Tuesday as resurgent strong winds fanned the state's biggest conflagration, drove flames from a separate, smaller blaze into a rural mountain community and prompted widespread precautionary power shutoffs. Already the second-largest California wildfire on record, the Dixie fire raging since mid-July in the rugged Sierra Nevada range northeast of San Francisco had charred 604,000 acres.
