The husband of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving in California. Paul Pelosi was held after his Porsche was involved in a collision with another vehicle in Napa County on Saturday night. No-one was injured and the other driver was not arrested. Eighty-two-year-old Mr Pelosi was charged with two misdemeanours and had his bail set at $5,000. He is not listed as being currently in custody.

An Egyptian court has sentenced Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh and several prominent figures from the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to lengthy jail terms on Sunday for “spreading false news” and plotting to overthrow the state, reports Agence France-Presse and the Reuters news agency. Aboul Fotouh, 70, who suffers from several medical conditions according to his family, was sentenced to 15 years in prison subject to appeal, the court ruling said on Sunday.

Nigerian police say they have launched an investigation after 31 people died in a crush in the southern city of Port Harcourt. It happened in a sports field on Saturday morning where a church was handing out food to the poor, some of whom had waited there overnight. The crowd "became tumultuous and uncontrollable" and organisers failed to calm the situation, police say. Many of those who died in the crush were women and children.

At least 56 people have died in Brazil's northeastern state of Pernambuco amid heavy rains over the weekend, according to the state's civil defense forces. An additional 56 people are missing and at least 25 are injured, Brazil's Minister of Regional Development Daniel Ferreira said on Sunday. More than 3,900 people have also lost their homes due to devastating downpours, Ferreira added.

Rafael Nadal set up a blockbuster French Open quarter-final against world number one Novak Djokovic on Sunday when he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in a five-set fourth round epic. Nadal, the 13-time champion at Roland Garros and holder of a record 21 Grand Slam titles, triumphed over the Canadian 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in a match which lasted four hours and 21 minutes. A small passenger plane with 22 people on board went missing in cloudy weather in Nepal on Sunday and authorities suspended a search in difficult terrain as night fell. Officials said bad weather and mountainous terrain had hampered their efforts to locate the plane, a De Havilland Canada DHC-6-300 Twin Otter operated by privately owned Tara Air. The plane took off in the morning for a 20-minute flight but lost contact with the control tower five minutes before it was due to land, government officials said.

A Pakistani woman separated from her family during the 1947 Partition met her Indian brothers for the first time last month after 75 years. Mumtaz Bibi, who was separated from her Sikh family during the turmoil, met her brothers Gurmukh Singh and Baldev Singh for the first time at the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan in April. "We are so happy that we've been able to meet our sister in our lifetime," Gurmukh Singh said.

A ferry ran out of fuel and sank in bad weather off the coast of Indonesia, officials have said. The country’s search and rescue agency said the vessel was carrying 43 people when it capsized on Thursday in the Makassar Strait, the sea separating the islands of Sulawesi and Borneo. Seventeen people have been rescued alive by two tugboats that were passing by.

A collection of previously unseen memorabilia of the Beatles before they became famous has been sold at auction. It includes photographs taken when the band played in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, in 1963. A huge fan of the Fab Four, 16-year-old Sandra Woodruff (nee Blaken) tracked the group down, after a tipoff, to room number 49 at the Royal Pier Hotel. The collection attracted £11,360 at auction.

The Indian government transferred two senior bureaucrats to different parts of the country after it found out that they were forcing a major sports stadium in Delhi to shut early so they could take their dog for a walk. The officials were identified as Sanjeev Khirwar and his wife Rinku Dugga, both bureaucrats in the capital city’s government.

Archaeologists have uncovered the ruins of an ancient Mayan city filled with palaces, pyramids and plazas on a construction site of what will become an industrial park near Mérida, on Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula. The site, called Xiol, has features of the Mayan Puuc style of architecture, archaeologists said, which is common in the southern Yucatán peninsula but rare near Mérida. Researchers estimate the city to have been occupied from AD600 to 900.

The Tango D10S -- a 12-seater financed by an Argentine fintech company - is designed as a flying museum in tribute to the former World Cup winner, who died of a heart attack in November 2020.

Monkeypox patients should avoid any contact with their pets for 21 days, according to new advice from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). So far, 106 people in the UK have been confirmed as infected with the virus. Gerbils, hamsters and other rodents could be particularly susceptible to the disease and the concern is it could spread in the animal population. The government said no cases have been detected in pets so far and the risk is still low.

The 18th century home in Burrillville sold for $1.525 million on Thursday, far higher than the $1.2 million asking price. “This purchase is personal for me,” buyer Jacqueline Nuñez, owner of WonderGroup LLC told The Boston Globe. “It’s not a real-estate development. It’s around my own beliefs.”
