Australia has reported its first locally contracted coronavirus death this year. The authorities said a woman, in her 90s, died in Sydney. She had contracted the virus in a family setting. New South Wales reported 77 new cases on Sunday. There are now 52 people in hospital, with 15 in intensive care. Sydney is currently in lockdown, as Australia's largest city fights to contain the highly transmissible Delta strain of the virus. The reported death is the state's 57th and the first in 10 months.

Crews in Charlottesville are preparing to remove a Confederate statue that became a rallying point for white supremacists and helped inspire their violent 2017 rally that left a woman dead and dozens injured. Saturday’s removal of a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee and another of Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson will come nearly four years after violence erupted at the infamous “Unite the Right” rally.

Portraits of dozens of anime characters, each with a small altar for fans to leave flowers, adorn the wall of a Bangkok gallery -- a tribute to fictional heroes who met an untimely death. The 2D Afterlife exhibit is made up of 50 of these creations from artist Jinnipha Nivasabut, who wanted to mourn the deaths of her favourite characters in popular shows and manga series. The core concept "is to explore the idea of why the deaths of these fictional characters could have such an impact on real people," the 22-year-old anime lover said.

Haiti’s government has requested that the United States send troops to protect key infrastructure after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse this week, the elections minister, Mathias Pierre, said on Friday. Haitian officials said they had requested military support to protect port, airport and gasoline facilities and other key infrastructure, the New York Times reported. The US state department confirmed the request but was non-committal on the US response.

A sealed cartridge of "The Legend of Zelda" for the old Nintendo NES console has sold for a world record sum of $870,000, auction house Heritage Auctions said in a statement Friday. The cartridge, dated to 1987, is still in its original packaging and trumps the previous world record sale of a video game -- $660,000 for a 1986 "Super Mario Bros" cartridge sold in April -- according to the auction house. The game was the "masterpiece" in a sale of 443 lots that runs until Sunday, Eric Bradley, spokesperson for the Dallas-based company, told AFP.

Japan issued evacuation requests to more than 120,000 residents in some southern prefectures due to heavy rain on Saturday. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest rain alerts in three prefectures on Kyushu island, prompting some local governments to order residents to evacuate.

The son of a leader of Chile's Mapuche people was shot dead by police on Friday in the restive Araucania province, local media reported, in a potential blow to attempts to improve relations between the state and indigenous people. The victim was Ernesto Llaitul, 26, according to the media reports citing the Chilean prosecutor's office. He was the son of Hector Llaitul, a Mapuche leader described as a spokesperson for the activist group Coordinadora Arauco - Malleco.

Dua Lipa is being sued after allegedly putting a paparazzi photo of herself on Instagram. The star was snapped queuing at an airport in February 2019 and later shared the shot with her fans "without permission or authorisation". Integral Images says Lipa profited from the photo, as her Instagram feed acts as a marketing tool for her music. It is seeking $150,000 (£108,000) damages and has asked for a jury trial. The company is also asking for an order preventing the singer from further acts of infringement, as well as legal costs. Lipa posted the photo to her Instagram account on 7 February 2019, about four days after it was taken.

A magnitude 6 earthquake jolted both sides of the California-Nevada border, tossed boulders onto a major roadway and was felt as far off as Las Vegas and even San Francisco, with days of aftershocks predicted, authorities said. The quake shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday was centered south of Lake Tahoe near Walker, a rural community of a few hundred households in the eastern Sierra Nevada. No major damage or injuries were reported, authorities said.

A fire engulfed a food and beverage factory outside Bangladesh’s capital, killing at least 52 people, many of whom were trapped inside by an illegally locked door, fire officials said Friday. So far 52 bodies have been recovered, but the top two floors of the factory have yet to be searched, said Debasish Bardhan, deputy director of the Fire Service and Civil Defense. He said the main exit of the factory was locked from the inside and many of those who died were trapped. Many workers jumped from the upper floors of the factory, and at least 26 suffered injuries.

At a press conference in Moscow, Taliban negotiator Shahabuddin Delawar said that "85 percent of Afghanistan's territory" is under the group's control, including some 250 of the country's 398 districts. Delawar also said the Taliban is free to attack administrative centres in Afghanistan as it made no promise to the US to leave them alone. But, he added, the group would not take provincial capitals by force.
