Villagers in India's southern state of Karnataka were in for a shock when they found a giant crocodile sauntering down the street. It had entered the village from a nearby river. A video, which has gone viral, shows locals following the crocodile from a safe distance. Wildlife officials later rescued the animal and released it back into the river.
Florida officials are working on plans to tear down what’s left of a partially collapsed oceanfront condominium building after concerns about the structure’s instability prompted a 15-hour halt to the search for survivors. After rescue efforts resumed Thursday evening, officials said they had started planning for the likely demolition of the remaining structure even as searchers continue to comb the rubble pile beneath it. Scott Nacheman, a FEMA structures specialist, said engineers are looking at different methods for the demolition and how to proceed “to make the site safe for ongoing rescue operations.”

A non-profit sea rescue group has slammed Libya’s coastguard after it witnessed the Libyan maritime authorities in what it described as chasing a crowded migrant boat and shooting in its direction in an apparent effort to stop it from crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. Members of the German non-governmental group Sea-Watch filmed the incident on Wednesday while flying over the area in an observation mission.

Angelina, 46, was spotted enjoying a charming date at Giorgio Baldi in Los Angeles with The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, 31. The number of deaths linked to coronavirus in India has moved past the 400,000 mark as the country tries to speed up its vaccination drive. Experts warn that the real number of fatalities might be much higher as many deaths are not officially recorded. India is only the third in the world behind the US and Brazil to record more than 400,000 deaths. The country has recorded 30 million cases - second only to the US.

Sir Richard Branson has named the date he'll fly to the edge of space. It will be 11 July, or very soon after. He'll be a passenger in the back of the Unity rocket plane his Virgin Galactic company has been developing in the US for the better part of two decades. The vehicle can climb to an altitude of 90km (295,000ft), giving those onboard a few minutes of weightlessness and a view of the curvature of the Earth. Sir Richard's intention is to introduce a commercial spaceflight service. Some 600 individuals have already lodged deposits to take the ride.

A monument to journalist and civil rights activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett was unveiled Wednesday in Chicago. Officially called The Light of Truth Ida B. Wells National Monument, the commemoration created by sculptor Richard Hunt was dedicated in the South Side neighborhood where Wells lived out her life. The monument has three bronze columns that support intertwined bronze sheets twisted into coils and spirals.

An 82-year-old woman who has spent six decades trying to reach space will join Jeff Bezos on the first human flight by his space company later this month. Wally Funk, who underwent training in the 1960s, will become the oldest person to ever fly to space. Mr Bezos has invited Ms Funk as an "honoured guest" and shared video on Instagram of him telling her the news. She will join the Amazon founder, his brother Mark and a mystery person who paid $28m (£20m) at auction for a seat.

Covid-19 infections have risen by 10% in a week in Europe after two months in decline and the risk of a new wave of cases is growing, says the World Health Organization. Regional director Hans Kluge said the risk had been heightened by sluggish vaccine rollouts, new variants and increased social mixing. Young people will be encouraged to make the new V&A East space their own by its director, who plans to cycle to every school in the four London boroughs that surround the venue. Gus Casely-Hayford said he wanted the museum, which will open in 2025, to be accessible to all and has committed to personally visit schools in Waltham Forest, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham to ensure young people knew the space in the 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, was for them.

President Joe Biden headed to Florida Thursday to meet with families heartbroken by the collapse of a beachfront condo building a week ago, as hopes of finding survivors in the rubble all but vanished. Biden and First Lady Jill Biden held hands as they left the White House early for the flight to Miami and a trip to nearby Surfside, where the toll in the tragedy now stands at 18 dead, with more than 140 still unaccounted for. The dead include two children, aged four and 10, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said late Wednesday.

Jewish settlers have agreed to quit an outpost that has become a flashpoint for clashes with Palestinians who also claim the land, officials said, under a deal aimed at addressing an awkward political test for the new Israeli government. Under the agreement with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, the settlers will leave Givat Eviatar outpost in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. But it seemed likely that at least some of the outpost's new buildings would remain, locked and under military guard, an outcome that is certain to anger Palestinian protesters who demand it be removed.

Vincent van Gogh's self-portraits will go on show in London next year, in what organisers say is the first exhibition dedicated to the Dutch post-Impressionist artist's depictions of himself. From February, The Courtauld Gallery will stage the display - from "Self-Portrait with a Dark Felt Hat" painted in 1886 in Paris to "Self-Portrait with a Palette" which van Gogh painted in an asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, southern France, in September 1889. He died the following year. Part of The Courtauld collection, the well-known "Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear", which van Gogh painted in 1889 after cutting off most of his ear, will also be on show alongside loaned works.
