A 7-year-old boy is being credited for helping to save his father and 4-year-old sister by swimming to shore and calling for help after they got caught in a strong current during a holiday weekend boating trip on Florida's St. Johns River. The boy switched between doggie paddling and floating on his back to keep from tiring out.

A herd of 15 wild elephants was approaching the city of Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan province, on Wednesday, defying attempts to redirect them after a journey of several hundred kilometres from forests to the south. The group of Asian elephants, which includes three calves, originally lived in a nature reserve, according to the official Xinhua, and has trekked for nearly 500km along highways and through fields of crops over the past months.

The sinkhole appeared in a field in Santa Maria Zacatepec on Saturday. Video footage shows locals running as the ground falls away and hole widens. Mexican authorities say the sinkhole was caused by a geological fault. However, local activists say phenomenon was the result of overuse of aquifers.

Brazil's president has defended its hosting of the Copa America tournament despite the raging Covid pandemic. There has been widespread criticism after the South American Football Association (Conmebol) announced on Monday that Brazil would be hosting the event, due to start next week. A Supreme Court judge has ordered President Jair Bolsonaro to provide more information on the decision. Brazil has been hit hard by the pandemic, with nearly 463,000 deaths.

Iran's largest navy ship the Kharg sank on Wednesday after catching fire in the Gulf of Oman, but the crew were safely rescued, Iranian media reported. State TV said the fire on Iran's highest-tonnage naval vessel started around 2:25 a.m.on Wednesday (21:55 GMT) near the Iranian port of Jask, where it was on a training mission.

Nearly 500,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been left without clean drinking water after a volcano erupted, the charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has warned. It says because cholera is endemic and poses a great threat there is an urgent need to provide people in the eastern city of Goma with safe drinking water. A reservoir and pipes were damaged when Mount Nyiragongo erupted on 22 May. Hundreds of thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes.

They found a link between earlier sleep timing patterns – getting up and going to bed early – and lower risk of a 'major depressive disorder'. It's possible that the greater exposure to light during the day results in 'a cascade of hormonal impacts' that can influence mood.

The world's first AI-powered, all-electric hydrofoil boat — which automatically stabilises itself a smoother ride — has been demonstrated at the Venice Boat Show. The craft — the Candela C-7 — was presented at the second iteration of the nautical event, which is being held at the Venetian Arsenal until June 6, 2021. The long-range boat, which has a range of 50 nautical miles, is able to decrease its water friction by up to 80 per cent by rising out of the water up onto its hydrofoils.

Britain recorded no new deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Tuesday. The last time Britain recorded no deaths was in March 2020, before the country had entered its first lockdown. Britain's overall death toll from the pandemic stands at 127,782 and is the fifth highest in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Bayern Munich chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is retiring from the club six months earlier than expected, and will be replaced by former goalkeeping great Oliver Kahn. Thailand held a welcoming ceremony on Monday to mark the return of two ancient hand-carved artefacts that were stolen decades ago and smuggled out of the country to the United States. The two 680 kg (1,500 lb) Khmer-style stone carvings had been on display at the Asian Arts Museum in San Francisco, which was required to forfeit them when a settlement was reached in February between the U.S. government and San Francisco authorities.

Authorities are offering $130,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for a mass shooting in Miami that left at least two people dead and more than 20 others injured early Sunday. The identities of the people who were shot were not immediately released. Authorities said they were ages 17 to 32.
