La Soufriere volcano on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent erupted on Friday after decades of inactivity, sending dark plumes of ash and smoke billowing into the sky and forcing thousands from surrounding villages to evacuate. Dormant since 1979, the volcano started showing signs of activity in December, spewing steam and smoke and rumbling away. That picked up this week, prompting Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ralph Gonsalves to order an evacuation of the surrounding area late on Thursday.

A Japanese woman has received what doctors say is the world's first lung transplant from living donors to a recovered coronavirus patient. Kyoto University Hospital said the woman underwent an 11-hour operation by a 30-strong medical team on Wednesday to transplant lung tissue from her husband and son. Covid-19 is known to cause severe lung damage in some patients, and people around the world have received lung transplants as part of their recovery from the disease. But the Kyoto hospital said this case was the first in which lung tissue had been transplanted from living donors to a Covid-19 patient.

Spain has blocked the auction of a painting in Madrid, following suggestions it could be a long-lost masterpiece by the Italian Renaissance artist Caravaggio. The starting price for Crowning of Thorns was initially 1,500 euros. But if it is indeed by Michelangelo Caravaggio, it could be worth up to €150m. The painting is being examined by experts and declared "not for export". The 17th Century oil painting depicts Jesus just before his crucifixion and, according to the auction catalogue, is attributed to Spanish artist José de Ribera.

Nineteen officers were injured on Thursday night, bringing the number hurt in a week of violence across Northern Ireland to 74. Police deployed water cannon for the first time in six years after coming under attack again in Belfast. Crowds rioted on both sides of gates that separate a loyalist area and a nationalist area in west Belfast. Petrol bombs, fireworks and stones were again used to attack police, who have faced rising disorder since 29 March.

Egyptian archaeologists have hailed the discovery of what is believed to be the largest ancient city found in Egypt, buried under sand for millennia, which experts said was one of the most important finds since the unearthing of Tutankhamun’s tomb. The team began excavations in September 2020, between the temples of Ramses III and Amenhotep III near Luxor, 500km south of the capital, Cairo. It called the find the largest ancient city, known as Aten, ever uncovered in Egypt.

A South Korean oil tanker held for months by Iran amid a dispute over billions of dollars seized by Seoul was freed and sailed away early Friday, just hours ahead of further talks between Tehran and world powers over its tattered nuclear deal. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Iran released the tanker and its captain after seizing the vessel in January. The ministry says the Hankuk Chemi left an Iranian port at around 6 a.m. local time after completing an administrative process.

Kering has completed the first phase of its new global logistics hub in North-West Italy, helping increase the French luxury group's storage and speed up global deliveries.
