China, South Korea vow cooperation on North Korea after top diplomat meeting

China and South Korea vowed to work together to address problems on the Korean Peninsula during the first visit by a South Korean foreign minister to China in three years. State Councillor Wang Yi, the Chinese government’s top diplomat, said the two countries had agreed “to promote the process to politically resolve issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

Egypt mummies to pass through Cairo in ancient rulers' parade

Crowds of curious Egyptians are expected to line the streets to witness an historic procession of their country's ancient rulers through the capital, Cairo. The lavish, multi-million dollar spectacle will see 22 mummies - 18 kings and four queens - transported from the peach-coloured, neo-classical Egyptian Museum to their new resting place 5km (three miles) away. The mummies will be relocated to the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation in what is called The Pharaohs' Golden Parade.

Covid: 30 blood clot cases found in AstraZeneca recipients in the UK

The UK's medicines watchdog says it has found 30 cases of rare blood clots in people who have had the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says the risk of having this type of clot is "very small". The UK cases were out of more than 18 million doses given as of 24 March. Fears over clots have led nations such as the Netherlands, Germany, France and Canada to restrict the jab's use.

Seal Alliance asks walkers to give the animals space as lockdown eases

The public is being urged to give seals space to protect them after a much-reported death of a seal in London. The Seal Alliance is warning that getting too close to seals can lead to their injury and death, even up to several months later. Seals have ventured further inshore on beaches and coastlines that were quieter during lockdown, it says. Last month a popular seal known as "Freddie" was put down after he was attacked by a dog in Barnes, London.

EU urges China to ensure freedom of speech after BBC journalist leaves country

The European Union on Friday called on China to ensure freedom of speech and the press after a British Broadcasting Corporation journalist in China relocated to Taiwan saying he had suffered threats and obstruction. The journalist, John Sudworth, told BBC radio he moved with his family because it had become increasingly difficult to remain in the country. Beijing denied making any threats.

Iran rejects meeting with U.S. at Vienna nuclear deal talks

Iran on Friday rejected any meeting with the United States in Vienna, where it is taking part next week in a session with the remaining participants in its 2015 nuclear deal, an Iranian Foreign Ministry website reported. “It is their business, whether other parties to the (nuclear accord) seek to consult bilaterally or multilaterally with the United States..., whether in Vienna or elsewhere,” Araqchi added. “The Iranian delegation will not have any talks with the U.S. delegation at any level.”

Italian restaurant owner wrongly targeted by US sanctions

One of Donald Trump's last sanctions before he left office was mistakenly on a restaurant owner in Verona, Italy. The error happened as part of the Trump administration's crackdown on blacklisted Venezuelan crude oil. In a case of mistaken identity, restaurant owner Alessandro Bazzoni found himself on the US Treasury's blacklist in January, but was this week finally taken off. Legal experts say this type of mistake happens regularly and can be costly.

Два самолета столкнулись в аэропорту Сургута

На стоянке в аэропорту Сургута столкнулись два самолета. Инцидент произошел вечером 1 апреля. При техническом обслуживании самолет ATR-72 с запущенными двигателями начал самопроизвольное движение и столкнулся с самолетом ЯК-40, который находился на стоянке. В самолетах на момент столкновения не были ни пассажиров, ни членов экипажа. Никто не пострадал. Самолеты получили механические повреждения.

Vietnam PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc to run for president

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was relieved from duty on Friday morning here to run for president at the ongoing 11th session of the 14th National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam. Phuc has been nominated to run for the post of the president to succeed Nguyen Phu Trong. This will be the first time ever the NA casts a ballot to elect an incumbent prime minister to the presidential post, according to Vietnam News Agency.

Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi charged with violating state secrets as wireless internet shutdown begins

Myanmar's ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged with violating the official secrets act, her lawyer said Thursday, as the ruling military junta cut all wireless internet services in the Southeast Asian country until further notice. Suu Kyi's charge of breaking the British colonial-era law is the fifth and most serious charge leveled against her since the military seized power in a coup on February 1. A conviction can carry a prison sentence of up to 14 years.

On London rooftop, Royal Opera Chorus reunites for performance

Wrapped up in coats and with London’s famed landmarks behind them, members of the Royal Opera Chorus sing the Anvil Chorus from Giuseppe Verdi’s 1853 opera “Il Trovatore” in their first reunion in a year. Standing apart due to social distancing measures brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 25 singers are gathered on the rooftop of the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden. Their performance, which also includes the final chorus from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, will be streamed on the Royal Opera House’s Facebook page on Good Friday as the venue prepares to welcome back audiences in May.

Taiwan train crash: dozens dead after express service derails in tunnel

Dozens of people have died after a train derailed in a tunnel in eastern Taiwan on the first day of a holiday period, authorities say, in the island’s deadliest rail disaster in decades. The 408 Taroko Express was carrying about 350 people when it derailed on Friday morning at Qingshui tunnel in Huaelien county, the transport ministry said. It said 36 passengers “had no signs of life”, and 44 others had been sent to hospital with injuries. Most of the fatalities were in the rear two carriages, authorities said.

Many have been selling takeaway drinks, but authorities say it's leading to large gatherings that could further spread the coronavirus.
