Phil Duracz caught a 9.34-pound whitefish while out on Lake Michigan earlier this month. According to the Indiana Department of National Resources, this new fish beat out the previous record by 1.65-pounds. That record had been set in 2019. The state department writes that the lake whitefish record has been broken eight times since the year 2012.

A popular Polish writer and journalist could face up to three years in prison for calling President Andrzej Duda a "moron" in a Facebook post in November. Jakub Zulczyk accused Mr Duda of failing to understand the US electoral process in a tweet to Joe Biden. Mr Duda's tweet stopped short of recognising his victory, pending Electoral College confirmation, but hailed his "successful campaign". Poland has made it a crime to insult state leaders and religion.

At least 20,000 Rohingya have fled a huge blaze engulfing shanty homes at refugee camps in south-eastern Bangladesh, officials said on Monday, in the third fire to hit the settlements in four days. Nearly 1 million of the Muslim minority from Myanmar live in cramped and squalid conditions at the camps in the Cox’s Bazar district, with many fleeing a military crackdown in their homeland in 2017.

The leading opposition presidential candidate in Congo-Brazzaville, who was seriously ill with Covid-19, has died hours after polls closed. Guy-Brice Parfait Kolélas died on a plane taking him to France for treatment, his campaign director said. Hours earlier the 61-year-old had appeared in a video shared on social media, where he removed his oxygen mask and told his supporters that he was "fighting death".

There are now more than 800 children who have been held in US Customs and Border Protection custody for 10 days or more after crossing the US-Mexico border, according to a report. Millions of cubic tonnes of soil due to be used to build a controversial US airbase on the Japanese island of Okinawa contains the remains of Japanese and Americans who died in one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific war, according to citizen excavators. The volunteers, who search for the bones of people who were killed or committed suicide during the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, have demanded that Japan’s defence ministry end work to clear the land, calling it an affront to the dignity of the war dead.
