Barcelona's iconic stadium will be renamed the Spotify Nou Camp

Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium will officially be renamed the Spotify Nou Camp. The deal with the music streaming giants will come into effect for next season. For the first time in its illustrious 65-year history, the ground will be rebranded. Spotify's logo will also appear on the front of both the men's and women's shirts.

Marking 60 years, Rolling Stones to go back on the road

The Rolling Stones will embark on a European tour this summer, playing stadiums and arenas, to mark their 60th anniversary as a band, the British rockers said on Monday. Called "SIXTY", the 14-show tour will kick off in Madrid on June 1 and travel to 10 countries in total, including Britain.

Eiffel Tower grows by six metres with new antenna

The Eiffel Tower grew by six metres on Tuesday when vertigo-defying engineers fitted a new radio antenna on top of the Paris monument with the aid of a helicopter. The tallest building in Paris, known affectionately as the Iron Lady, measures 330 metres in height after the new addition.

Polish, Czech and Slovenian PMs visit Kyiv in EU show of support

The prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia are travelling to Kyiv by train, the first foreign leaders to visit the Ukrainian capital since Russia invaded its neighbour last month. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office confirmed the visit on Tuesday but gave no further details about the gathering.

Seven killed in new Burkina attack

At least seven people, including four volunteers in an anti-jihadist militia, have been killed in the fifth attack to strike northern Burkina Faso in under a week, security sources said Tuesday. A local official confirmed the attack, putting the toll at about 10 casualties, seven of whom had died.

Dust from Sahara dumped on Spain, coloring sky orange

Spain issued extremely poor air quality ratings for Madrid and a large swath of the country Tuesday after a mass of hot air from the Sahara dumped dust after crossing the Mediterranean. Spain’s national air quality index qualified as “extremely unfavorable” — its worst rating — the capital and large parts of the southeast coast.

Turkmenistan strongman's son wins presidential vote

The son of Turkmenistan’s autocrat leader, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, has decisively won the presidential election, officials said on Tuesday, paving the way for hereditary succession in one of the world’s most tightly controlled countries. Serdar Berdymukhamedov, 40, won the ballot held last Saturday with 73% of the vote, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) said on its website.

South Korea reports record deaths amid omicron surge

South Korea had its deadliest day yet of the pandemic on Tuesday, with 293 deaths reported in the latest 24 hours, as the country grapples with a record surge in coronavirus infections driven by the fast-moving omicron variant. The 1,196 virus patients in serious or critical conditions were also a new high.

Indian court upholds school hijab ban in southern states despite protests

An Indian court upheld a local ban on the hijab in classrooms on Tuesday, weeks after the edict stoked violent protests and renewed fears of discrimination against the country's minority Muslim community. The southern Indian state of Karnataka was on edge for several weeks after a small group of girls in their late teens were prevented from wearing the hijab on school grounds at the end of last year.

Cruise ship with thousands on board runs aground in Caribbean

Officials in the Dominican Republic have confirmed that a large cruise ship had run aground off the Caribbean island nation’s north coast shortly after leaving the port of Puerto Plata. According to local media, the ship is the Norwegian Escape, with some 3,000 tourists and 1,600 crew on board. Officials hope the ship can be refloated at high tide.

F1 champ Lewis Hamilton wants to change his name

Lewis Hamilton wants to change his name to add his mother’s surname. The seven-time Formula One champion — full name Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton — plans to include “Larbalestier” as a third middle name. His father Anthony and mother Carmen divorced when he was a child. “I am really proud of my family’s name. My mum’s name is Larbalestier and I am just about to put that in my name,” Hamilton said while preparing for the season’s opening grand prix this weekend in Bahrain.

Julian Assange denied permission to appeal against extradition

The Supreme Court has refused to allow Julian Assange latest appeal against extradition to the US. A court spokesman said Mr Assange's application did not raise "an arguable point of law". The decision is a major blow to his hopes to avoid extradition. The Wikileaks founder, 50, is wanted in the US over the publication thousands of classified files in 2010 and 2011. His lawyers said he had not ruled out launching a final appeal.

Boy, 3, accidentally shoots mother dead in Chicago suburb car park

A three-year-old boy accidentally shot his mother dead as the family sat in their car in a parking lot at a supermarket in a suburb of Chicago, police said. The woman was shot on Saturday in Dolton and pronounced dead at hospital, police said. The family were sitting in their car outside a Food for Less store when the boy somehow found the gun and fired it, striking his mother, police said.

More than 30 people killed in Burkina Faso armed attacks

Armed militants killed at least eight people who were collecting water in a town in northern Burkina Faso on Monday morning, its mayor said, bringing the total killed in three days of violence in the restive area above 30.  Monday's attack took place in Arbinda, in the province of Soum, which has suffered several deadly raids by Islamist militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has tested positive for COVID-19, he said in a video message on Instagram on Monday. Mitsotakis, triple vaccinated against COVID-19, met with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul on Sunday.
