A fire broke out early Friday on an Italian-flagged ferry sailing through the Ionian Sea, injuring three people among the nearly 300 people on board, Greek officials said. Two people were still trapped on board and had telephoned for help, with a Super Puma helicopter en route to pick them up, the Greek coastguard said. The fire on the Euroferry Olympia, which was heading to Italy from the Greek port city of Igoumenitsa opposite Corfu, broke out at 4:30 am. The vessel was carrying 239 passengers and 51 crew on board as well as vehicles.

A 2,000-year-old Roman cemetery containing at least 20 ornately decorated graves has been uncovered near the shoreline in the northern Gaza Strip, with the antiquities ministry calling it the most important local discovery of the past decade. Gaza is rich with antiquities having been an important trading spot for many civilisations, from as far back as the ancient Egyptians and the Philistines depicted in the Bible, through the Roman empire and the crusades.

The Met Office has issued a second rare red weather warning to cover London, and south-east and east England. A red warning - meaning there is a danger to life from flying debris - covering parts of south-west England and south Wales is in place. Hundreds of schools will be closed, all trains in Wales are suspended and the military is on stand-by. Forecasters warn Eunice could bring wind gusts of up to 90mph on Friday, causing significant disruption and power cuts.

A court in India has sentenced 38 people to death and ordered life in prison for 11 others over a series of bomb blasts in 2008 that killed dozens in the western city of Ahmedabad. The court had on February 8 convicted 49 people over the coordinated attacks that killed 56 and wounded 200, launching shrapnel through markets, buses and other public places in Gujarat state’s commercial hub.

Tequila 512 is suing Kendall Jenner's 818 Tequila for trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition, alleging that the brand copied its logo and color scheme. In its suit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Central California, Tequila 512 accused K & Soda LLC, which owns 818 Tequila, of "simply and blatantly" copying its branding. A representative for 818 Tequila dismissed the claims in a statement to TMZ.

Rescuers are scrambling to reach a boy who has been trapped in a well in Afghanistan for two days. A video on social media shows the boy, Haider, wedged inside a well in a remote area of Zabul province in the south of the country. Since getting trapped on Tuesday, the boy's condition has reportedly deteriorated. But rescuers digging a tunnel to reach the boy are close to getting him out, a local official said.

Archaeologists in the United Arab Emirates have uncovered the country's oldest known buildings, dating back at least 8,500 years. This is more than 500 years older than the previous record-breaking discoveries, according to Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism in a press release Thursday. The buildings are located on the island of Ghagha, west of the city of Abu Dhabi. The structures which have been unearthed are "simple round rooms," which have stone walls that are still preserved up to a height of almost a meter.

Peter Paul Rubens’ 17th century masterpiece “Portrait of a Lady” is set to go up for auction in Poland next month, the DESA Unicum auction house said Thursday. The Flemish master’s oil-on-canvas portrait of a dark-haired woman in a rich black velvet dress has an estimated value of 18 million to 24 million zlotys ($4.5 million- $6 million). The painting, currently owned by a British citizen, will be auctioned in Warsaw on March 17.

France and its allies in a European force will withdraw their troops from Mali after almost a decade, President Emmanuel Macron has announced. The troops have been involved in the fight against Islamist militants in the country since 2013. Macron said the decision to leave followed a breakdown in diplomatic relations, amid growing hostility from Mali's governing military junta. The forces will be re-deployed elsewhere in Africa's Sahel region.

No long-distance trains were expected to run in the northern half of Germany before midday on Thursday. Cancellations and delays are also expected in regional traffic. About 54,000 households were left without electricity during the night in North Rhine-Westphalia, while in Bavaria about 10,000 people were affected by power cuts, according to operators. New Zealand scientists have discovered a rare baby ghost shark, a little-known species of fish that lives in the shadowy depths of the ocean. Ghost sharks - also known as chimaera - are rarely spotted, and sightings of their young are even more uncommon. The newly-hatched shark was collected at a depth of about 1.2km (0.7 miles) underwater near the South Island. Scientists say the find deepens understanding of the juvenile stage of the species.
