Archaeologists have uncovered over 18,000 pieces of pottery inscribed with details of life in ancient Egypt -- including lines written as punishment by badly behaved students. The 2,000-year-old fragments also included receipts, school texts, trade information and lists of names, according to researchers at Germany's University of Tübingen, which carried out the excavation. The discoveries were made at the site of Athribis, an ancient settlement built around 200 kilometers north of Luxor.

Three graduate students in Harvard University's anthropology department are suing the school, claiming it failed to protect students from sexual abuse and career-ending retaliation by a professor, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday. The plaintiffs, Margaret Czerwienski, Lilia Kilburn and Amulya Mandava, allege that John Comaroff, a professor of African and African American Studies and of Anthropology, "kissed and groped students without their consent, made unwelcome sexual advances, and threatened to sabotage students' careers if they complained," according to the lawsuit.

Belgium's leading art museum has returned a painting it held for 71 years to the great-grandchildren of a Jewish couple whose property was looted by the Nazis after they fled on the eve of World War Two. The family's Berlin-based law firm approached the Musees royaux des Beaux-Arts (Royal Museums of Fine Arts) over five years ago and on Thursday, after a briefing signing ceremony, workers took down the painting and wheeled it off to be packed.

France's Coastguard has saved 36 people after their boat ran into difficulty off the north coast, officials say. It said a patrol boat picked up the "shipwrecked people" in the North Sea off Leffrinckoucke, close to the Belgian border, and took them to the port of Dunkirk on Thursday morning. Those rescued are believed to be migrants trying to get to the UK.

An air strike by the French "Operation Barkhane" battling Islamist militants in the Sahel has killed 10 members of a terrorist group in Burkina Faso during the night of Feb. 7 and Feb. 8, France's chief of staff said in a statement on Thursday. Four civilians were also killed in the operation, close to the town of Ouahigouya, near the border with Mali.

French researcher Luc Montagnier, who has died at 89, shared the Nobel medicine prize for his vital early discoveries on AIDS, but was later dismissed by the scientific community for his increasingly outlandish theories, notably on Covid-19. Montagnier and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi shared the Nobel in 2008 for their work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris in isolating the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Just like his father did more than three decades ago, Austrian skier Johannes Strolz on Thursday won Olympic gold in the Alpine combined race. The 29-year-old, who has won only one World Cup slalom, was fourth fastest after the downhill run on Thursday. But he was half a second quicker than anyone else in the slalom, helping him edge the first-run leader Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway by 0.58 seconds. The combined adds the times from one downhill run and one slalom run.

The 17-year-old boy, thought to be from Maastricht, was in hospital for routine surgery on his knee after a football injury. He awoke unable to speak his native tongue, and only communicated in English. The boy also couldn't recognise his own parents and thought he was in Utah (US). After 24 hours, the teenager 'spontaneously' recovered both his ability to speak and understand his native language after friends came to visit him. Medics believed he had foreign language syndrome an incredibly rare condition.

Twelve people were injured by falling debris on Thursday when the Saudi military blew up a Yemeni rebel drone targeting an airport close to the border, officials said. The Huthis claimed responsibility for the attack in a tweet, saying they had targeted an airport "used for military action against Yemen" and warning citizens to "stay away" from such sites.

Germany’s highest court said Thursday that it has dismissed a television comedian’s complaint against rulings that prohibited him from repeating parts of a crude poem he wrote about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The legal battle goes back to 2016, when comic Jan Boehmermann recited the poem on public television to illustrate something he said wouldn’t be allowed even in democratic Germany. The poem described Erdogan as “stupid, cowardly and uptight” before descending into sexual references.

The body of a 70-year-old woman has been found in her house in northern Italy, two years after her death. Marinella Beretta lived alone near Lake Como in Lombardy. Her decomposed body was discovered on Friday by the Como fire brigade following complaints that a tree had fallen in her garden as a result of overgrown vegetation, Como City Hall press officer Francesca Manfredi confirmed to CNN on Wednesday. Beretta's body was found sitting in a chair in the living room.
Kurt Zouma was fined two weeks’ salary by his club, West Ham, and lost his sponsorship deal with Adidas on Wednesday after he was filmed kicking and slapping a cat. An animal welfare charity took custody of Zouma’s two cats while it investigates video footage that has been shared widely on social media and led to the France international issuing an apology for his conduct. His exact salary has not been disclosed but British media reported the fine by West Ham to be more than $300,000.

Switzerland votes on Sunday whether to become the first country to completely ban medical testing on animals, after animal rights campaigners gathered enough support to stage a referendum in the country, which hosts a huge pharmaceuticals sector. More than 550,000 animals died in laboratory tests in 2020 in Switzerland, according to government statistics. The figure includes 400,000 mice and rats, nearly 4,600 dogs, 1,500 cats and 1,600 horses.

Britain's Prince William visited an Abu Dhabi mangrove park at the start of a climate-focused visit to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday. The duke of Cambridge will also learn about efforts to fight the illegal wildlife trade and will tour Dubai's Expo site on his first official visit to the wealthy Gulf state.
