Lata Mangeshkar, the "nightingale of India" who gave her voice to Indian movies for more than 70 years, was honored at a state funeral Sunday, after she passed away at the age of 92. "Lata Di died at 8:12 a.m. due to multi-organ failure after over 28 days of Covid-19 diagnosis," Dr. Pratit Samdani, Mangeshkar's doctor, told reporters outside Breach Candy Hospital. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to Mangeshkar at the funeral.

At least five Pakistani soldiers have been killed at a border post by firing from neighbouring Afghanistan, Islamabad said on Sunday, in the second such attack since the Taliban came to power last August. The Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) group has stepped up attacks since the group unilaterally walked out of a months-long ceasefire agreement – brokered by the Afghan Taliban – in early December after accusing Islamabad of not fulfilling its promises.

Two adult men have been taken to a hospital with gunshot injuries, and they are expected to survive, police said. A woman died on the scene. Oxford researchers announced Thursday the discovery of a highly virulent strain of HIV that has been lurking in the Netherlands for decades, but because of the effectiveness of modern treatments, is "no cause for alarm." Their analysis, published Thursday in the journal "Science," showed that patients infected with what they call the "VB variant" had 3.5 to 5.5 times higher levels of the virus in their blood than those infected with other variants, as well as a more rapidly fading immune system.
