Cyclone kills at least 10 in Madagascar, destroying homes and cutting power

A cyclone killed at least 10 people in southeastern Madagascar, the second to hit the Indian Ocean island in just two weeks, triggering floods, bringing down buildings and cutting power, officials saidon Sunday. One of the worst-hit towns was Nosy Varika on the east coast where almost 95% of buildings were destroyed.

'Catastrophic' Dortmund thrashed by Leverkusen in Haaland's absence

Queen marks 70th anniversary with support for Camilla

Queen Elizabeth II remembered the past and sought to cement the future of the monarchy Sunday as the United Kingdom marked the 70th anniversary of her rule. In remarks delivered in time for Sunday morning’s front pages, the monarch expressed a “sincere wish” that Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, should be known as “Queen Consort” when her son succeeds her as expected. With those words, Elizabeth sought to answer once and for all questions about the status of Camilla, who was initially shunned by fans of the late Princess Diana, Charles’ first wife.

India honors singer Lata Mangeshkar at state funeral, dead at 92

Lata Mangeshkar, the "nightingale of India" who gave her voice to Indian movies for more than 70 years, was honored at a state funeral Sunday, after she passed away at the age of 92. "Lata Di died at 8:12 a.m. due to multi-organ failure after over 28 days of Covid-19 diagnosis," Dr. Pratit Samdani, Mangeshkar's doctor, told reporters outside Breach Candy Hospital. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to Mangeshkar at the funeral.

Pakistani soldiers killed in firing from Afghanistan: Military

At least five Pakistani soldiers have been killed at a border post by firing from neighbouring Afghanistan, Islamabad said on Sunday, in the second such attack since the Taliban came to power last August. The Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) group has stepped up attacks since the group unilaterally walked out of a months-long ceasefire agreement – brokered by the Afghan Taliban – in early December after accusing Islamabad of not fulfilling its promises.

A woman was killed and two men were injured in a shooting at a church Friday night in Aurora, Colorado, police said. Two adult men have been taken to a hospital with gunshot injuries, and they are expected to survive, police said. A woman died on the scene. Explosion at Nigerian oil vessel sparks fears of major spill

A vessel with a storage capacity of two million barrels of oil has exploded off the coast of southern Nigeria’s Delta state, raising fears of an environmental disaster and concerns about the fate of its crew. Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL) said on Thursday that flames had engulfed the Trinity Spirit following the blast a day earlier. The floating production, storage and offloading vessel can process up to 22,000 barrels of oil a day, according to the operator’s website.

New 'highly virulent' HIV strain discovered in the Netherlands

Oxford researchers announced Thursday the discovery of a highly virulent strain of HIV that has been lurking in the Netherlands for decades, but because of the effectiveness of modern treatments, is "no cause for alarm." Their analysis, published Thursday in the journal "Science," showed that patients infected with what they call the "VB variant" had 3.5 to 5.5 times higher levels of the virus in their blood than those infected with other variants, as well as a more rapidly fading immune system.
