The Olympic torch relay began its second day on Thursday atop the Great Wall, with Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan and Chinese Olympic medallists among those taking turns carrying the flame along a route shortened to three days because of COVID-19. The relay for the torch that will open the Feb. 4-20 Winter Games is much more modest than the globe-spanning relay for Beijing's 2008 Summer Games.

A kleptomaniac parrot has become the latest contributor to New Zealand cinema, after stealing a GoPro camera and taking it on a sweeping tour of remote Fiordland. Aotearoa’s native alpine parrot species, the kea, is known for its curious and mischievous nature – and for swiping wallets, jewellery, packed lunches, windscreen wipers and other valuables from unsuspecting tourists and visitors.

An Italian former priest, known as "Don Euro" for his constant requests for money from his parishioners, has been jailed for extorting a former bishop. Luca Morini, who lost his status as a priest after a series of scandals, was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison on Wednesday. He was also convicted of impersonation, after assuming the identity of a judge while hiring male sex workers.

A16th century drawing by one of the key figures of the German Renaissance has been valued in excess of $10 million after it was initially purchased at a yard sale for just $30 in 2017. According to Agnews Gallery -- the London auction house in possession of the artwork -- Albrecht Dürer, who died in 1528, is regarded as both the greatest German artist of his time and as one of the most important artists and intellectuals of the European Renaissance. The drawing that has been rediscovered is titled "The Virgin and Child."

The International Space Station (ISS) will continue working until 2030, before plunging into the Pacific Ocean in early 2031, according to Nasa. In a report this week the US space agency said the ISS will crash into a part of the ocean known as Point Nemo. This is the point furthest from land on planet Earth, also known as the spacecraft cemetery. Many old satellites and other space debris have crashed there, including the Russian space station Mir in 2001.

Novak Djokovic has thanked the Serbian president for his support during his legal challenge to play at the Australian Open. The Serbian tennis star's visa was cancelled and he was deported due to Australia's strict vaccination rules. Named The Enigma, it is believed to be the largest cut diamond on earth and may have formed from a meteoric impact. At 555.55 carats the gem is considered extremely heavy for a diamond, weighing about the same as a banana. The black rock is expected to fetch over £4.4 m ($6m) at a Sotheby's auction in London by the time online bidding closes next week. The gem is a carbonado, one of the toughest forms of natural diamond.

US special forces hunted down high-ranking jihadists in a rare airborne raid in northwestern Syria on Thursday, killing 13 people in an operation the Pentagon described as "successful". The operation was thought to be the biggest of its kind by US forces in the jihadist-controlled Idlib region since the 2019 raid that killed Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The Duchess of Cambridge has become the official patron of English rugby, a role previously held by her brother-in-law, Prince Harry. From Wednesday, she becomes the figurehead for the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) -- patronages bestowed upon her by the Queen.
