Sculptor Dan Medina took a statue of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna to the site of their helicopter crash on the two-year anniversary of the tragedy. The 73kg bronze statue is temporary but Medina hopes a permanent version is sited in a prominent Los Angeles spot. Denmark has said it will start pulling its troops out of Mali after the West African country’s transitional government this week insisted on an immediate withdrawal, a blow to France as its security operations in the Sahel region begin to unravel. The decision comes amid tensions between Mali and its international partners, including regional bodies and the European Union, that have sanctioned Mali after the military government failed to organise elections following two coups.

Apple has once again become the top-selling smartphone brand in top market China, along with the rest of the world. That's according to findings from two separate research reports, which come just before the tech giant is set to release its earnings for the most recent quarter on Thursday. Apple's market share in China reached 23% in the last quarter of 2021, compared with 16% the same period the previous year. This surge came as total smartphone sales in China fell 9% year-on-year, according to Counterpoint.

The Jordanian troops have killed 27 suspected smugglers attempting to enter the country from neighbouring Syria, they said, adding that some others also carrying drugs fled back into Syria. Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, is expected to visit Turkey next month, the Turkish president has said, as the two countries move to heal rifts. A Kurdish-led militia alliance says it has regained full control of a prison in north-eastern Syria seized by the Islamic State (IS) group six days ago.
