Spanish energy firm Repsol said a clear-up operation for a major oil spill on the coast near Peru’s capital Lima would take until the end of February, in an environmental incident declared a “catastrophe” by the government. Dead seals, fish and birds have washed up on the shore covered in oil, while fishing activities in the area have been suspended, the government has said. Repsol said on Friday it had enlisted fishermen to help clear up the oil.

Two Canadians have been shot dead and another injured after a dispute among guests at a hotel resort near Cancún, Mexico, local security officials say. Gunfire erupted on Friday at the Hotel Xcaret Mexico in the tourist town of Playa del Carmen, about 70km (45 miles) south of Cancún on the Caribbean coast. Photos of the suspected gunman were posted online by regional police chief Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez. The attacker, a hotel guest, is still at large and a manhunt is underway.

The first Polish Roman Catholic church in New Bedford is set to close this month after 117 years, following years of declining membership and the death of its pastor. Less than 30 people attended a recent Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, said John Kearns, spokesperson for the Diocese of Fall River. A retired priest has been filling in until the church’s doors close permanently on Jan. 30, after Rev. Conrad Salach passed away in October, The Standard-Times reported Thursday.

Britain's advertising regulator has banned a TV ad that showed a girl eating cheese while hanging upside down, saying it could promote behaviour that could lead to choking. The ad for Dairylea cheese, a brand of U.S. snacks giant Mondelez, had been shown on British video-on-demand services in August last year. It featured two girls, aged six and eight, hanging upside down from a soccer goalpost, discussing where food went when you hang upside down. One of the girls then ate a piece of Dairylea cheese.

US singer and actor Meat Loaf, famous for his "Bat Out of Hell" rock anthem, has died aged 74, according to a statement on Friday. "Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side," read a statement on his Facebook page. A Canadian high school named after the Duke of York has announced plans to rename itself, in an attempt to distance itself from the growing controversy surrounding the Queen’s second son. The principal of Prince Andrew high school in the province of Nova Scotia told families on Wednesday to expect the change as the school looks for a name that “upholds our values as a safe and inclusive” space.
