A wildfire near California's legendary Highway 1, which winds along the Pacific coastline, prompted evacuation orders in Monterey County on Friday night. The Colorado Fire was sparked in Palo Colorado Canyon in the Big Sur region, according to the county's office of emergency services. Due to the blaze, Highway 1 was shut near the Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur, the Department of Transportation said in a tweet early Saturday.

Yemeni rebels say death toll from prison airstrike at 80

The death toll from a Saudi-led coalition airstrike that hit a prison run by Yemen’s Houthi rebels climbed to at least 82 detainees, the rebels and an aid group said Saturday. Internet access in the Arab world’s poorest country remained largely down. The airstrike in northern Saada province Friday was part of an intense air and ground offensive that marked an escalation in Yemen’s yearslong civil war.

‘Catastrophe’: Peru oil spill clean-up to take weeks

Spanish energy firm Repsol said a clear-up operation for a major oil spill on the coast near Peru’s capital Lima would take until the end of February, in an environmental incident declared a “catastrophe” by the government. Dead seals, fish and birds have washed up on the shore covered in oil, while fishing activities in the area have been suspended, the government has said. Repsol said on Friday it had enlisted fishermen to help clear up the oil.

Police in Pennsylvania are searching for at least three monkeys that have escaped after a truck carrying about 100 of the animals was involved in a crash. The truck carrying the monkeys collided with a dump truck on Friday afternoon in Montour county.

Two Canadians shot dead at upscale Mexican resort

Two Canadians have been shot dead and another injured after a dispute among guests at a hotel resort near Cancún, Mexico, local security officials say. Gunfire erupted on Friday at the Hotel Xcaret Mexico in the tourist town of Playa del Carmen, about 70km (45 miles) south of Cancún on the Caribbean coast. Photos of the suspected gunman were posted online by regional police chief Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez. The attacker, a hotel guest, is still at large and a manhunt is underway.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas announced on their Instagram pages Friday that they welcomed their first child together. She said a surrogate gave birth to the couple’s baby on Jan. 15. The couple did not reveal their baby’s name or sex and asked for privacy “during this special time as we focus on our family.”

Airstrikes kill 70 people and knock out internet in Yemen

At least 70 people were killed and more than 130 injured when an airstrike hit a detention center in Yemen on Friday, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said, as the Saudi-led coalition continued to ramp up its deadly offensive on rebels in the war-torn nation. Another airstrike early Friday hit a telecommunications building in the strategic port city of Hodeidah, causing a nationwide internet blackout, according to NetBlocks, an organization that tracks network disruptions. At least three children were killed in that attack, Save the Children said.

117-year-old Polish Roman Catholic church closing this month

The first Polish Roman Catholic church in New Bedford is set to close this month after 117 years, following years of declining membership and the death of its pastor. Less than 30 people attended a recent Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, said John Kearns, spokesperson for the Diocese of Fall River. A retired priest has been filling in until the church’s doors close permanently on Jan. 30, after Rev. Conrad Salach passed away in October, The Standard-Times reported Thursday.

Suspected ISIL fighters kill 11 Iraqi soldiers ‘in their sleep’

Suspected ISIL (ISIS) gunmen have attacked an Iraqi army barracks in Diyala province, killing 11 soldiers as they slept, according to reports citing Iraqi security officials. The sources said the attack took place early on Friday in the al-Azim district, a mountainous area more than 120km north of the capital, Baghdad.

UK bans ad showing girl eating cheese while hanging upside down

Britain's advertising regulator has banned a TV ad that showed a girl eating cheese while hanging upside down, saying it could promote behaviour that could lead to choking. The ad for Dairylea cheese, a brand of U.S. snacks giant Mondelez, had been shown on British video-on-demand services in August last year. It featured two girls, aged six and eight, hanging upside down from a soccer goalpost, discussing where food went when you hang upside down. One of the girls then ate a piece of Dairylea cheese.

'Bat Out of Hell' singer Meat Loaf dead at 74

US singer and actor Meat Loaf, famous for his "Bat Out of Hell" rock anthem, has died aged 74, according to a statement on Friday. "Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side," read a statement on his Facebook page. "Daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours." No cause of death was given in the statement.

The trial director position would oversee the startup’s long-promised human trials of its medical device, according to the listing. Neuralink’s brain implant — which Musk has said already allows monkeys to play video games with their thoughts alone — is intended to help treat a variety of neurological disorders, such as paralysis.

Tearful Adele postpones entire Las Vegas residency

Adele has postponed her entire Las Vegas residency, just 24 hours before the opening night. "I'm so sorry, but my show ain't ready," the star told fans in a tearful update on Instagram. "Half my team have Covid and it's been impossible to finish the show," she said, adding that "delivery delays" had also played havoc with her plans. She was due to play the first of 24 concerts at the Caesars Palace's Colosseum on Friday.

Nestle withdraws Hindu KitKat range in India over accusations of disrespect

The limited range of the well-known chocolate bar had been launched as part of the global “KitKat travel breaks” range, where photos of artwork by local artisans were printed on the wrappers. But the Indian version of the range, which was designed to celebrate the crafts of the Indian state of Odisha, provoked an online backlash as they featured images of Hindu deities Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Mata Subhadra. Many expressed outrage that the wrappers might end up in “dustbins, drains, gutters” or trodden underfoot, which would be disrespectful of the gods and the Hindu faith.
