Scientists have discovered a vast reef of "pristine" rose-shaped corals apparently unharmed by climate change in deep water off the coast of Tahiti, UNESCO announced Thursday. Mapping approximately three kilometres long and up to 65 metres wide, UNESCO said it was "one of the most extensive healthy coral reefs on record".

The 19-year-old Belgian-British pilot Zara Rutherford set a world record as the youngest woman to fly solo around the world, touching her small airplane down in western Belgium on Thursday — 155 days after she departed. At least two people have been killed and dozens more wounded after an explosion in a busy shopping district in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore, police say. The explosion took place in the Lohari Gate area, a densely packed neighbourhood consisting of small shops packed into narrow criss-crossing streets, on Thursday afternoon, police spokesperson Nayab Haider told Al Jazeera.

China, Russia and Iran will hold a maritime joint exercise on Friday, a public relations official from Iran’s armed forces told the semi-official ISNA news agency on Thursday. The wargame will take place in the northern Indian Ocean, Mostafa Tajoldin said, and is the third joint naval drill between the three countries, with the previous one taking place last February.

The first foreign aid plane has arrived in Tonga, carrying much-needed water and supplies for the Pacific nation. New Zealand said its military plane landed at Tonga's main airport after workers cleared ash from the runway. Other planes and ships sent by New Zealand and Australia are on the way. Saturday's eruption of an undersea volcano and tsunami wave saw volcanic ash blanketing the islands, posing a serious health risk. The ash and sea water have contaminated water supplies.

French champagne sales rebounded last year to reach a record 5.5 billion euros ($6.2 billion) as demand soared despite the lingering impact of Covid restrictions that weighed on restaurants and bars, producers said Wednesday.
