Myanmar's ousted civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to another four years in prison on Monday, the second round of verdicts against the Nobel prize winner. Suu Kyi was found guilty of multiple charges that include possession of unlicensed walkie-talkies, a source with knowledge of the court proceedings told CNN.
Christopher Wright has uncovered several old master paintings in public and private collections over five decades. Now he has discovered that a copy of a painting by Sir Anthony van Dyck, which he bought for himself for £65 in 1970, may actually be an original by the 17th-century Flemish court painter to King Charles I. Wright estimated the painting might be worth around £40,000. It's a portrait of Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Regentess of the Spanish Netherlands.

Uganda ended the world's longest school closure on Monday, ordering millions of students back to the classroom nearly two years after learning was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some 15 million pupils have not attended school in Uganda since March 2020 when classrooms were shuttered as Covid-19 swept the world.

Scientists have revealed that organic molecules found on Mars are "consistent with early life", a tantalising clue in the hunt for alien life in our Solar System. British police have applied for a “no-fly” zone over Windsor Castle as it reviews security arrangements at the landmark where Queen Elizabeth II has spent much of the pandemic. If granted, a restricted airspace order would prevent aircraft from flying up to 2,500 feet (762 meters) above and 1.5 nautical miles (around three kilometers) around the castle.

A Saudi princess and her daughter have been released from a high-security jail after being held for nearly three years without charge, campaigners say. Princess Basma bint Saud was detained in March 2019 as she prepared to fly to Switzerland for medical treatment. It is not known why she was detained, and neither she nor her daughter Suhoud were charged with any crime.

Ten people have been killed after part of a cliff collapsed onto leisure boats on a Brazilian lake. Another 32 were injured in the accident in the south-east of the country. At least one of the boats appears to have sunk, while others managed to escape from the huge wave the falling rock created.

Nineteen people, including 9 children, have been killed in an apartment fire in New York City, in what the city’s fire commissioner called one of the worst blazes in recent memory.
Dozens of people were injured in the Bronx fire, and at least 32 people were hospitalized. According to the FDNY, approximately 200 firefighters responded to the scene Sunday at the Twin Park apartments, a 19-story building on East 181st Street.

At least 22 people have frozen to death after heavy snow trapped them in their vehicles as tens of thousands of visitors thronged Pakistan’s hill town of Murree, officials say. In the past 24 hours there has been heavy snowfall, and all routes leading to the hilltown were closed due to heavy traffic, leaving thousands of cars stranded.

A building housing a canteen in Chongqing in China’s southwest has collapsed after an explosion suspected to have been caused by a gas leak, killing at least 16, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Friday. As of midnight on Friday, 26 people had been taken from the site, 16 of whom had died, the broadcaster said on Saturday.

More than 100 people have been killed by suspected “bandit” militants in northern Nigeria, it was reported on Friday, as authorities continue to search for bodies and for suspects after days of violence. Gunmen on motorbikes arrived in large numbers in as many as nine communities between Tuesday and Thursday night, opening fire on residents and burning homes, according to survivors who fled.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck China's remote northwestern Qinghai province early Saturday, the US Geological Survey said. The epicentre of the quake, which struck at about 1:45 am (1745 GMT) at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), was located about 140 kilometres north-northwest of the city of Xining, US seismologists said. A 5.1-magnitude aftershock followed about 25 minutes later, USGS said.
