Rare albino Jaguarundi cub rescued in Colombia

A rare albino jaguarundi cub discovered in Colombia is the first of its kind to be found in the country. Officials spotted the female cub in the Aburra Valley metropolitan area and transferred it to a nearby conservation park for medical treatment. The cub is completely white with red eyes. The tiny cub will live at the park because its white fur limits its ability to survive in the wild.

Lebanon seizes millions of amphetamine pills in shipment of lemons

Lebanese authorities on Wednesday intercepted nine million pills of the recreational drug captagon inside a shipment of lemons, foiling an attempt to smuggle them to the Gulf, media reported. Captagon - a mix of amphetamines also known as the "poor man’s cocaine" - is one of the more popular recreational drugs among affluent youth in the Middle East.

Metal detectorist finds small gold bible near York

A small gold bible, once perhaps owned by a medieval aristocrat or royal, has been found by a metal detectorist. NHS nurse Buffy Bailey, from Lancaster, found the book while searching farmland near York with her husband Ian. The 600-year-old object, which is just 0.5in (1.5cm) long, could be worth more than £100,000, Mrs Bailey said. An expert described it as an "exceptionally unique" artefact which would have originally been owned by someone "incredibly wealthy".

Barca trio test positive for COVID-19

Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti and Gavi are set to miss Sunday's trip to Real Mallorca after testing positive for COVID-19, the LaLiga club said on Wednesday. The Catalans have been hit by a number of cases in their squad, with Clement Lenglet, Dani Alves, Jordi Alba and Alejandro Balde also returning positive tests this week.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has tested positive for Covid-19 for a second time and will miss the Premier League clash with leaders Manchester City on Saturday, the club said. The 39-year-old Spaniard's first positive test was in March 2020.

Palestinian president makes rare Israel visit for talks

Israel unveiled a package of "confidence-building measures" for the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, after Defence Minister Benny Gantz hosted talks with Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on his first visit in years. Abbas, leading a high-ranking delegation on his first visit to Israel for an official meeting since 2010, held talks with Gantz at his home in the central town of Rosh HaAyin, according to Israeli sources and media.

China urges US to protect its space station from satellites

China is calling on the United States to protect a Chinese space station and its three-member crew after Beijing complained that satellites launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX nearly struck the station. A foreign ministry spokesman accused Washington on Tuesday of ignoring its treaty obligations to protect the safety of the Tiangong station’s three-member crew following the July 1 and Oct. 21 incidents.

Thirty-One killed in Sudanese gold mine collapse –official

At least 31 people were killed in the collapse of a private gold mine in western Sudan, a mining official told Reuters on Tuesday. “Thirty-one bodies were recovered after the collapse of a gold mine in En Nahud‮ ‬locality in West Kurdufan state. Only one person was rescued alive,” said Khaled Dahweya, director of government-owned Sudanese Mineral Resources Company.

Journalist makes history by becoming first person with Maori face tattoo to present news

On Monday, December 27,  Oriini Kaipara read the news bulletin at 6.00pm for Newshub after she was asked to fill in for usual hosts Sam Hayes and Mike McRoberts. The 37-year-old’s chin tattoo – called a moko kauae- is one traditionally worn by Māori women and she noted how it has been her lifelong dream to read primetime news sporting it.
