Amnesty International calls on Azerbaijani authorities to release human rights defenders Leila Yunus and Intigam Aliyev
International human rights organization Amnesty International calls on Azerbaijani authorities to immediately free the human rights activists Leyla Yunus and Intigam Aliyev, the statement of the Amnesty International reads.
“Intigam Aliyev, a prominent Azerbaijani human rights defender, has been placed on three months’ pre-trial detention on trumped up charges. Intigam Aliyev is one of the few human rights defenders in Azerbaijan who have provided legal assistance and representation to the victims of politically motivated persecution and submitting some of these cases to the European Court of Human Rights. Intigam Aliyev was also one of a group of experts and human rights defenders who compiled a list of politically motivated arrests in Azerbaijan and cooperated with international organizations to demand their release,” the statement reads.
International human rights organization calls on the authorities to release Intigam Aliyev immediately and unconditionally, as he is a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for his work in defence of human rights.
The statement also expresses concern about the fact that Azerbaijani prisoner of conscience Leyla Yunus’ health has deteriorated and she needs urgent medical assistance. “The Azerbaijani authorities are not allowing her hospital treatment or providing her with medication. The prison authorities in detention facility have refused to let Leyla Yunus be hospitalized, and are not providing her with adequate healthcare. Amnesty International considers Leyla and Arif Yunus prisoners of conscience, jailed solely for their criticism of the Azerbaijani government,” the statement reads.
