Police intend to stop protest march against power tariff rise in Armenia
A rally of ‘No to Robbery’ civic initiative started in Liberty Square of Yerevan, to be followed by a march to the presidential residence.
Deputy Chief of Yerevan Police, Valery Osipyan, told participants that today’s rally and the planned march are unlawful as no permission of the authorized body was issued.
“In such cases the police have the right to stop your rally and march by all means prescribed by law,” Osipyan said urging those present to refrain from illegal actions.
He suggested that the rally organizers indicate their demands in a letter to be submitted to the relevant unit of the Armenian Presidential Staff.
“The police will not allow staging a march. We are going to maintain public order and prevent violations,” the deputy police chief declared.
As was reported, Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) Company earlier submitted a bid to the Public Services Regulatory Commission about a rise in electricity tariffs. The parliamentary opposition considers it unfounded and serving the interests of that company. The current night-time tariff for the population is 31.85 drams per one KWh, the daytime tariff is 41.85 drams. The bid of ENA proposed raising the tariffs to 48 and 58 drams respectively. Yet the Commission satisfied the bid only partially on June 17. The tariffs In Armenia will increase by 6.93 drams, and not by 17 drams.
The Commission’s decision will take force on August 1, 2015.
